I am not a knife maker, but I am a knife nut and a fan of Damascus steel. I would like to make a necklace out of Damascus bar stock with dimensions appox. 2" long by 1.5" wide. It will be the silhouette of an eagle sitting atop a maltese cross (I'm a fireman). I would like to send the stock to an engraver to engrave the eagle and have two letters carved out in the middle of the maltese to be filled with gold.

My question is this: Is it possible to finish the piece in a way so as to bring out the contrast of the Damascus and still keep it rust free. I don't need oil stains on my shirts :o . I guess I'm looking for a way to "seal" it for lack of a better term. Any help is greatly appreciated.

IMHO steel does not make great jewelry because of problems with contact with skin. Probably the simplest way would to just keep it waxed and do regular maintenance. My second choice (in terms of simplicity not expense) might be to have the back electroplated with some non reactive metal like silver or gold. You would still need to wax the front side. I do carbon Damascus so I don't know how much contrast can be obtained from stainless Damascus, but that might be another solution.

Blueing it would make it quite stain resistant, though I'm not sure if that's what you want. The best option would be to get stainless damascus.
