Damascus quote

I just spoke with a customer that wants a copy of a knife he saw in a custom gun book.

An educated guess says the blade is about 11 inches overall (full tang) and about 1-1.25" wide. He wants it to be about 3/16" at the spine.

He wants it in a ladder pattern. BUT, he wants the ladder to run at an angle to the spine of the blade

. So when you grind the grooves in the billet to create the ladder, I guess you would just grind them in at like 35 degree angles to the edge of the billet ?

Or would a good twist pattern work just as well???

I'm not sure what kind of steels, I suppose anything with good contrast.

I'll most likely taper the tang, so I don't know if I could get the billet forged down a little on one end or not. I might just be asking for trouble with that. I could just grind it down, but I was thinking in terms of keeping waste at a minimum.

Can I get some quotes???

Please email them if you don't want to post them here.

Thanks,
Nick

The problem with the twisted damascus is that the pattern will run on one side towards the point and on the other side away from it. If you want equal designs on both sides, you'll have to stay away from twisted damascus. I do ladder patterns running at an angle and crossed ladder patterns as well. It's no more difficult than a "normal" ladder pattern.
