My apology if this has been asked before but my search for the answer was unsuccessful. I gather that damascus steel is a folded blend of carbon and stainless steels. Is there enough carbon steel to generate a good spark and is the mix hard enough to not get damaged by doing it? Thanks in advance.

Actually, damascus is a blend of steels......period.
It can be stainless, carbon, or crap. I'm affraid that "damascus steel". Says about as much about a steels's composition as "steel" does.
