The Jan. 2001 Scientific American has an article research into the original formula for damascus steel. I haven't read it yet but it looks good.

I don't think Moran is mentioned by name. The author regards modern damascus as "welded" damascus and says that it is chemically different from true or "wootz" damascus. He also says that the key to damascus is a iron carbide known as cementite. I got to finish it now.

I haven't gotten my copy of that issue yet. I look forward to it with pleasure.

The method of fabricating wootz steel is covered in this article here.

The authors received a patent on the process, you can find it at this URL, for some reason I cannot form an abbreviated hyperlink to it.

Damascus patent

Edited to attempt to fix link. Para
