It looks so cool, but I won't buy a blade just for looks. Its got to be a user also. So what's the deal with this. Does it take a good edge and hold it. Is it tough enough? Is there one type or brand that is better?

If it's well made, properly heat treated damascus, then you have a steel that's pretty to look at and nice to use. Yes it can rust, but then all steel can so just clean it after using it and it'll be fine. It can hold a good edge like any other steel.

I have a hunter in Damascus. It works just fine. Sharpens nicely and stays that way long enuff. Alittle tuff cloth works wonders for keeping it looking sharp too.

Just don't buy any damascus stuff off the Home Shopping Network and you should be just fine.

Mike Norris does a damascus in D2. This will hold an edge with the best of them.

The problem for me is not that damascus will not make for a good user blade. It will. My problem is that it is so pretty that I don't want to damage it.

Damascus steel can be as good or bad as the steels used and the maker putting it together.

I posed this question the other day on the Buck forum, for the 110 damascus blades. I wanted a "pretty" knife that could be used as well. Anybody have experience with the 110 damascus?

it really depends on the type and on the finish and heattreat...same steel can be good or bad.

I use alot of Damasteel....stainless...I specialize in users so I gibe it a real deep etch that makes it pretty scratch resistant....you just dont see the scratches so well....and it takes the use very good....

I'm about to find out! Waiting for a beautiful little Damasteel fixed blade from Jens which I intend to use very frequently (every day :))

Beautiful Damascus blades should see use... theye're too nice to put away in a drawer and should perform as good as any other well treated steel.

Just my 2c
