Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you guys can tell me what kind of Damascus steel these knives are made from. I was told they are of "the highest quality". "hand forged, hand shaped Damascus" and that's all I know. I was wondering if you guys know if these blades were made from blanks, mass produced by a company or if indeed they might be hand forged. Are quality? There are no maker marks on the blades. I have my doubts but obviously I know nothing about Damascus steel. I think that one of the knives is "birds eye" Damascus. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much

Let's see, they don't list the steels, they won't give you details.....hmmm

It's impossible to tell what kind of steels are used simply by looking at them. Most likely whatever they used is junk or they would have told you. This is pretty much always the case. Knifemakers who care about their reputation will list the steels used.

well unfortunately the maker is deceased. and his wife didn't really know much. of course she is trying to get as much money as possible. she said he made his own blades out of lawn mower blades but he purchased the Damascus ones and then re - shaped them. but I wonder if he purchased cheap blanks or if it was really hand forged from another knife maker.
and can Damascus be made to look like the blades I have, I thought Damascus lines were all the way thru the entire knife.

The "lines" in Damascus steel are the edges of layers. They aren't always visible, the blades are acid etched to make them stand out. If you grind or polish the blade, the lines disappear. I don't know of any way to identify where a particular blade was made or what steels went into it from a couple of pictures. Ed Schempp has done a lot of Damascus and he posts in the Spyderco sub-forum from time to time. You might try contacting him, it's possible he could help.

The first two knives are what is usually called random pattern damascus and the last one is what is usually called raindrop, people have other names for the different patterns but those are the standard terms. To be honest they look like low quality blades, the etch is very deep indeed and shows there was a lack of care and attention put into the blades. Have a look at some of the knives posted in the "hand made and custom forum" here to see some really good quality examples of damascus. :)

thanks.

Do you think they were hand forged? Or blanks from china?

All the cheap Damascus comes from Pakistan I believe.
I guess you will have to use one to work put if they are good or not.
