Damascus steel....what is it and does Buck use it?

It's just pattern welded steel. It's primairy purpose is to look pretty. And there are many different version of damascus steels

Hey Captain Mark...

Check out this post of the 110 Damascus I got in December:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4210886&postcount=22
There is a link you can hit at the top of that post to get the whole thread.

EEE (Ron) and I both got ours that month after several months of waiting. There were only 50 of the 110 Damascus blanks in this run. I'm wondering why, but not complaining. I'm a lucky buck. Mine had an price uplift of $75 for the blade (it used to be $41 as can be seen on the Buck Knives Custom Knife page - shadowed out as it is not available).

Our's is a Stainless Damascus which is also cool. The pattern here is called "raindrop".

I love that suckah (my Damascus Buck...not Ron as he and I are still gettin' to know each other LOL).

Buck is out of 110 Damascus and I have heard of no plans of when it will be back, or what type.

They do offer a 193 Alpha for an uplift of $175.00 here: http://www.buckknives.com/custom_knife_shoppe.php#

I think Damascus is something you either love or hate. I love it for its' beauty and history. Here is a link you may find interesting: http://damascus.free.fr/
Here is another site that I found buried in the one just referenced: http://www.dfoggknives.com/damascus.htm

None of our real "experts" are commenting???

OK...Here's what little I remember... :)

Damascus steel is steel which is folded and hammered flat & thin and then folded & hammered flat & thin and then folded & hammered flat & thin etc for many many cycles...sometimes it is heated between foldings/hammerings...the numerous folds are what gives Damascus the distinctive pattern...and the hammering work-hardens the steel...Buck has stated they use two different alloys of stainless for their Damascus...

That's pretty much all I remember...but there are numerous online discussions on it...

The legendary swordmaker, Hattori Hanzo, produces the best Damascus steel... ;) (or so I've heard) :p

Yeah Trax, I was hoping one of the expert steel knife knerds wouid pipe in too. But ya covered it. I always, like you, thought they were pounded together and now I read in the link I put up that they can also be welded together (as stated by GarageBoy too).

I can recall as a kid placing a penney and a quarter or nickel on the track to try and get a "Damascus" or alloy coin made by a train. Never worked.

Have heard it cuts like crazy and sharpens easily. Don't have experience with that.

BUT, I am thinking of releasing a Weidmannsheil I have for that duty. AM VERY interested in what ya all think of my using that one as I have no idea regarding it's relative value as a collectable. Please post your 2 centavos worth.

This Weinerschmell has a COA with it as the tang stamp is missing the "M". It also states that it is 512 layers. Don't know what the Buck Stainless run from last year is in layers...anyone?

Kona Beagle prefers the Buck:

Here's what I could find aside from Parker now owning the name as W. went out of biz in the 90's (from what I read):

I'm gonna post over there for their opinion too.

The knife is from Soligen, Germany. Where is Herbie when ya need him? He might know something about 'em.

I've seen posts on Weidmannsheils over at talkblade.info - they are collectible. :)

But we have a noted authority right here at Bladeforums.com who will answer your questions...Bernard Levine...(Surely you've posted there before???)

As Jim said: "Maybe he'll even trade for one of his bucks"

That's right, at this time I bought my second white handle. 124 :) :)

I don't know a lot of what happens in Solingen. It ist too difficult, as some brands are gone to be trade marks. There were tie ups, fusions, cooperations, that nearly nobody knows what happens in Solingen. Puma was bought by Herbertz, Magnum sells the low price range of Böker, and so on. And the fatality is: Today the Name on the knife has nothing to do with the manufacurer. One Manufacturer makes folders and three companies sell them under one's own name. And so on. And then you have the international knife market. Seller like Herbertz put their name on knives they bougt in China and sell them as their own product.

This confusion in fusion is nothing for my mother's son. I like the plain structure of a Manufacurer like Buck. It is visible what happens in this company.

Markus Balbach is one of the famous knife maker in Germany. he makes limited editions for some Companies in Solingen. If you have some questions: you meet him at http://www.messerforum.net/.

By the way: "Weidmannsheil" is part of a greetig. When two huntsmen meet each other, one says "Weidmannsheil" (the hunters success) and the second says "Weidmannsdank" (Thanks of a hunter). Thats the background of this word.

my thousandth part ot two centavos

It's just pattern welded steel...

Is it an actual weld??? Steel melted and fused???

I recall my dad telling me about our old double-barrel 12ga (w/exposed hammers) having Damascus barrels...he told me it was formed and then soldered to make the tubes contiguous...and of course, don't fire modern shells in it... ;)

I never did find any shells for it...(this was back in 69)...One of my ex-brothers-in-law ended up with it...the thief... :grumpy:

Hi Haebbie,

Please post some new pic's of this 124 when you can. I'd like to see the two of them side by side. One day I will have 124's with the white handle, red handle, and the older style stag handle ;) :D .

Hope it comes within the next days. I'll make some pic's at once. Good Luck to you finding the 124 you search. I'm dreaming for the red one now.

I can tell you a little bit about the recent history of Weidmannsheil. The company folded tents in 1991 after over 100 years making nice knives. In 2001 the contents of their factory where bought by Bulldog Brand which is where the Jim Parker name comes in. Bulldog started finishing knives from the parts left over in the plant and that is what has been available on the Bay recently. Some of them are spectacular knives. I have a carbon steel hobo with antique elephant ivory scales and have owned a couple of others. They are definitely collectable. Three years ago you could find 3 or 4 pages of them offered on eBay. Today it’s more like half a page so the supply is drying up.
As to yours Goose, it is a second, the name on the blade, but it wasn’t a factory knife ever so I think you should use it to explore the quality of Damascus steel and let us know how you like it. Mind you there wont be any more of them so it’s up to you.
