i asked before but no one answered me ; how is damascus steel better then any other steel? is it harder? better edge retention what? or does it just LOOK better?

I think it looks really cool, but I don't know if it has any other benefits:confused:. You might want to try asking somewhere else like in the blade discussion forum or the knife makers forum.;)

I saw your previous post and "almost" replied..... but got lazy, sorry.

For me, Damascus steel is all about LOOKS .... which it certainly has plenty of. I know very little about it's mechanical properties, but I'll soon be finding out since I'm privileged to have one of these in works:

Damascus is no longer considered to be higher performance than other steels, though that doesn't mean it can't be. It depends greatly on the steels used, the process and skill of the maker, and the heat treatment, and of course the actual knife has to be good, steel isn't everything. The thing about damascus is that you can get interesting properties when using two different steels, one being tougher than the other, or the two having good edge retention for different reasons, together, possibly giving the best of both. There are way too many variables. However, since it is very expensive, it is used mostly for looks, most of the well known makers make a very usable, beautiful steel, it all depends on your pocket book and what you like.

I disagree. At least with some of stainless Damascus that I've used/use. Damasteel is a fantastic steel with great edge retention. Tempered/hardened to the correct Rockwell scale, it will outlast most conventional stainless steels. Yeah, it look nice, but with the right combination of steels it uses(check out CPM Damascus), it can far surpass other knife steel. You might notice that even some of the production knife companies are offering stainless Damascus as an alterative to conventional stainless.

I don't see how that disagrees with what I said. I said that it generally isn't considered higher performance than the high-tech cpm steels, though that just the general opinion of enthusiasts today, which is far from fact. Then I gave reasons why it could be higher performance than other steels. No real testing has been done, so theories are all that I can give.

I wasn't necessarily pointing fingers Larrin. Just my .02 on Damascus for use.

Though I do disagree with this statement. To me it makes no sense. Everything is expensive now a days, and yes Damascus is more expensive to produce than conventional stainless. AND..................????????????????? I don't get your point I guess.

Listen, Devin Thomas is my father, I'm not trying in any way to get people from buying damascus. Go buy thousands of damascus knives! It all goes to a worthy cause, putting me through school. If you would like to know more about the performance of damascus, you should frequently check DevinThomas.com, where I will soon be updating the site with a FAQ, which I have written. I'm also adding a news section, putting some links up, and finally putting something in the "Meet Devin" page.

You're blowing this way out of proportion Larrin. I wasn't bashing you, mearly stating my own points. Lighten up brother.

You should be proud to have a father with that kind of talent. I own quite a few knives with his steel. ;)

You're taking what I'm saying too seriously. I'm just being sarcastic. I forget that I'm supposed to use those dumb smilies to show that I'm being sarcastic, otherwise people think I'm being serious. Oh, but Devin is my daddy. :)

Larrin,

I was just looking at your dad's work and had to say that his damascus steel looks absolutely awsome.;)

P.S. Why don't you put your dads web-site link in your user profile.:)

Wow ! A "white glove" knife for sure, maybe even a mask to cut down on breath moisture.........yes..........a this is shiner for sure.

Robbie Roberson ;)

damascus could be much MUCH better than any other "conventional" steel - when properly made by skilled maker, otherwise its only fashion look :)
in the short, point of damascus is using a lot of steels at once - you can have very tough steel in there to give your knife mechanic abilities, very hard steel to give your knife cutting abilities and other just to provide good looking patterns :)
