I don't own any knives with damascus steel but I am interested in picking one up. I heard that damascus steel is typically not as strong as most non-damascus steel though. Is there any truth to this?

I feel the other wy about it... some of the steels you can get are VERY strong... other steels may be stronger but that is not to say that ALL the other non-damascus steels are stronger.
If you wish you could ask that they are heat treated differently, my friend and teacher could heat treat it to a bainite state if that is what you desired...

It's like any other steel. There are good grades and not so good. The idea is to mix hard steels with soft, giving the knife flexibility and hardness. If you're going to use it as a display only, you can buy the cheaper Damascus. A good brand I like is Bear & Son. Its quality is decent and affordable. BW, sold by Smoky Mountain, and Marble's are lower grade. Premium grades are available and are beautiful; however, there are many patterns. The pattern on a Leek Damascus is beautiful, but I just don't care for it.

I've seen some patterns, even on Bear, that are almost muddy (see example below). It pays to eyeball it when you can or rely on good photos. Many of the ones posted on eBay are pathetic. Out of focus, too far back, silhouettes...when are people going to learn how to photograph black knives?

Good luck.
