Damascus Update

Wanted to let everyone know we are getting closer to having some Damascus. I settled on an alloy mix. Got it all cut up and shipped out to Salem. We decided to go with a 15n20 and 26c3 mix which should work really nice. This first test run a will be 2” wide and finish ground to 1/8”. here are a few pictures as I know you love those.

Looking good. How many layers do ya'll plan? Any particular pattern planned?

The 3 patterns discussed are Burl/random, twist and ladder. As to the later count
170- 270 for ladder
80-100 for twist
150 for random

I like the layer counts. Should be a bold pattern.

good choices... the 26c3 is about 1.25% carbon, while the 15n20 is 0.75%

I've heard that a large carbon variance can cause warping issues...
I don't expect it should be a problem since you're using a high layer count, you'll likely diffuse to about 1% average minus a bit from burn off

Very cool my friend! Couple of questions. Gonna be in bar or billet form? Do you have an idea of pricing yet? Gonna be something you'll have in continuous supply?

Salem is rolling it out to what even thickness we need. We then will thermal cycle it and surface grind down to clean up. And yes the plan is to keep him busy and keep us stocked up. As for price we have kicked around a few numbers and the price we are trying out on this run is $5 a square inch. The bars are 2” wide and 12-13” long. We now need to set up a way to hold the steel for plasma cutting.

Nothing is out of the question but that kind of stuff get pricy very fast as material waste is through the roof.
