I know some will want to flame me for putting canvas micarta on a damascus blade, but I kind of like it, and anyway, it's what the customer wanted. ;)

Opinions and critique welcome.

Thanks for looking!

P.S. My apologies to those of you using dial-up. I usually compress the photos some before uploading, this time I forgot.

phillip...don't worry ....i am one of those weirdos with micarta on a damascus blade.....i love this one.....i like these users that u make.....i don't like recurve edges at all but i also wouldn't order one......i'd love to see what a drop point version of that would look like.....thanks for sharing.....ryan

Phillip, a lovely knife in every way except the canvas micarta. The business of the canvas clashes/competes with the beautiful damascus to my old eyes. Black paper micarta might be more pleasing to the eye, and, of course, African blackwood would look sensational, but might have less gripping power depending on the how it is finished.

If that's what the customer wanted then micarta can't possibly be the "wrong" choice. It is a custom knife, after all. I have no issue with micarta on damascus for a knife intended to be used.

I like the knife, and I don't think the micarta handle detracts from it at all.

Great knife Phillip. Crazy about your damascus patterns.

Hate the micarta, but that's my problem. ;)

I'm dreaming about what the piece would look like with a great piece of ironwood or amber stag.

The important thing Phillip is that you make a great knife. As far as materials go, some will always like this and some that.

I love, love, love the design and the damascus. Awesome. But I do agree with the previous posts that the pattern of the canvas doesn't fit the pattern of the blade. It clashes, like wearing striped pants and a polka dot shirt, and it detracts from the overall appeal. Any patternless, dark material would look better, as would a patternless or random pattern material like wood grain. That's just looks though, and I reiterate that this would be a really great user. Nice work.

Hi Ryan,

The small knife in this pic is the same design, only straight edge and different materials:

One thing I want to do is start using more high end materials, like stag and ivory. That's one reason I'm looking forward to the Blade show, I intend to buy a lot there.
I'm thinking though, that stag (or ivory) may not work well with this handle, because of all those curves. Do you (or anyone else) have an example of a curvy handle with stag scales?

You mean striped pants and polka dot shirts don't go together? :grumpy: Now I know why people keep looking at me funny... :D

Thanks everyone for the comments, constructive and critical. :)

thanks for the pic phillip....i'd buy a few if i wasn't broke.....i think stag would look killer on that design if feasible....i don't know if it would be possible.....maybe throw in a nice hamon on some w-2 also....now you're talkin!.....ryan

awsome knife I just don't care for damascus/micarta its like putting a vyinal seat cover in a caddilac

I don't mind the micarta/damascus thing. The knife flows nicely and looks good with what it has. By the way, very nice damascus.

As a lover of highly contoured handles I think the canvas micarta is superb on your knife!

Stag tends to look weird when its shaped ergonomically and the texture/color is removed in some areas.

Nice knife! Actually I would prefer a nice piece of wood for a handle, but there's nothing wrong with the micarta one.

Regards,

Jos

Philip,
Real nice Damascus and I can do recurves all day long and twice on Sunday.
Like how the front pin is contoured and if Loveless and Lile,Fisk,Fitch(among others) can use micarta..are your plunges a trademark?
Nothing wrong with them,I didn't mean that,I like 'em :)

Well, since you asked, I'm with Ryan. Really like your Damascus, got no problem with the Damascus and Micarta together (even though part of me thinks I should), but I would pass on the recurve. Still a great looking knife and I'll bet great to use.

Thanks for posting!

the handle and blade are getting close to mirror images of each other. I crossed my eyes while looking at it, what an interesting effect.
This is one of the nicest knives of yours I've seen. Twice as good in my view as that bocote handled chopper you posted awhile back. Based on all your knives I've seen to this point, this is the one I'd pop for. Very cool.
