OK...before all ya forum vets get on me...I tried searching for this word five times and got a "Page Not Found" error (does that happen to others too?).

Anyway, I have read a bit about Damascus steel on the internet...and you know that everything on the net is true.

I have one Damascus knife. A Wienersmell, or something like that, folder.
It's in its coffin in the closet. Haven't ever used one to cut or ever sharpened one.

Thinking about ordering a 110 DM when the BCS gets more of that steel in.
I would like to consider using it in my EDC rotation. Good steel? How does it compare to ATS-34 and HeBeeGeeBee (BG-42) Buck steel? Smell like chicken?

Thoughts/comments welcome and appreciated...

Goose, don't know if I can answer you question about the comparison of the steels, cause I havn't used a damscus blade...damascus a good steel...it's not stainless like the others. Because it's a blend of different steels damascus has a toothiness/serrated type of edge...(GOOD:D :D for slicing chicken:D :D). Some users like this feature of the steel, I just think it looks terrific:thumbup:.

You get one, use it and write us a review;). Preston

My search isn't working either. There was a couple of threads on Buck damascus in the last 2 or 3 months.

Didn't know about the toothiness...good feature. Once had a girlfriend that had that "feature" (not good) but that's a whole other forum. Sorry to digress...ANYWAY...

I too like the look and me's thinks that it will be a great tool. I'm not a great sharpener...thank goodness I can send my Alaskan to Buck to do that for free. Was just wondering how the edge holds up after moderate use comapred to the other Buck steels.

You are right Preston...maybe I'll get one and let ya know. Thinking of nickel, no pins on Sambar...and get it engraved with Mike's initials in case it ever gets "lost" at the scene. :D  :D

Have a great Saturday!

Hey Goose, go ahead, and at least they'll know who to mail it back too. :D My initials are MPK. I still have a couple of friends on the force so they'll know I don't have it in me to commit any heinous crimes. (theft of abandoned buck knives is not a heinous crime) :D ;)

Wish I could say that about heinous crimes. In my adult life I've had two speeding tickets in 25 years, oh, and last summer I stole a orange hi-way cone from an abandoned field to give to a buddy that needed one to mark off some cement work he was doing in his driveway. A true Outlaw ;)
(been pulled over lots of times for riding like an idiot, but I am always respectful)

EDIT: oh, I did get another ticket after being pulled over for some bogus reason but ended up only with a fix-it for not having my address changed with the DMV after moving...I had only been at my new casa a month...but he wanted to pull me over and "chat" I guess.

I am thinkng of getting it engraved with my initials, but everyone will just think it's for the days of the week for my my underwear rotation; "MWF".

To My Buck Brother with the "similar mindset"...
All The Best,

Hey Pack Rat...

Yeah, the leaflet with the Alaskan says "free sharpening"...or, are you going "HUH?" about my sharpening skills?

One link will have you gringe, take a deep breath, and start a web poll to revoke my BCCI membership and banish me from this forum...

Gospel truth:

I suck at sharpening...Eagle Scout, yes...Buck Nut, yes...Sharpener, NO :o

It's embarassing, but I'm amongst fellow addicts. It's cleansing and I feel better admitting my fault(s).

I do have a diamond stone I use for "finishing"...but I just suck at it as a rule.

Hey, and by the way my rodent buddy, thanks for "Ratting" me out...:D

Goose.

Well, sorry to have ratted you out, but if you keep trying to sharpen by suction, you may get lipped...

But I do appreciate the info on the Alaskan sharpening!!!! Shows how much attention I paid to that little white slip of paper. I just spent the last 10 minutes or so digging through my Alaskan boxes...

I totally missed the free sharpening thing....

Thanks!!!!!

and yeah,,,,that link does make me cringe... I'll send ya one email...

howdy goose ,
on the DM , once years ago i had one of a difrent brand... it sharpened easly and cut realy really good...like he said the layers have a toothy effect... one of the drawbacks is that it will RUST !!! it is two difrent types of carbon steel so you have to keeep it waxed or oiled and use menerol oil as you dont want wd40 flavor in any doe you may take.... and if you put side leaverage to open that can of paint and bend it it can delamante if you hapen to have a weak bond which can happen... yea- voice of experance there on all three issues live and learn....

I have a Buck damascus 110 that I have owned about ten years. I never have used it but I do know that if you breath on it you will get rust. I just take it out now and then and look at it.

Hey Dave...
Thanks to you, Preston, and Nolan for the note about the non-stainless and rusting. One of those things I knew but forgot. My Wienerschmell damascus hasn't rusted but I've never cut a thing with it and it stays in it's coffin.

Rust...important, especially if I move to Hawaii (yeah, that'll happen) where the humidity is high, is important to know about in advance and take steps against. The mineral oil tip is cool...thanks. I "used to" lightly coat my EDC blades down with 3-in-1. When I get back into doing that I will swtich.

And, the potential for layer separating with side leverage on a paint lid makes sense...I'll use my Alaskan or 560 for that.

The Buck DM I get (IF I get it) will be used. So, I appreciate the points my Buckys and will be aware of such when I get one; keep it clean, dry, and no pry.

Goose, have you been to the forum on sharpening in the General section? They have lots of tips/tutorials:) on sharpening.

I've always sharpened freehand but got a Sharpmaker...because of reading those threads...and like it. I could get a blade very sharp freehand but was always unsure...with the Sharpmaker it's a "no brainer". Which is good for me:rolleyes:. Preston

Careful which mineral oil you get...you don't want the laxative from the drug store...you want the wood preserver from a kitchen supply store...the one recommended for rolling pins, wooden bowls, etc...and it's the best for scales, too... :)
