just heard from scottie hays in texarkana
he tells me don fogg is teaching a damascus class this fall but the class isn,t full
i don,t understand this
no one wants to learn from the best??

At least from my point of view from Europe, damascus classes seem not to be very interesting anymore. I know of a lot of guys who teached themselves how to make it and if you visit a knife show over here you will see more damascus blades than blades made from homogenous steels. I know of at least one professional knifemaker who attended a show this spring and who thought up to then that damascus, better say pattern welded steel, is a specialty of a chosen few including him and who was realy disappointed to see that nearly everybody who forges blades makes pattern welded steel, too.

Personally i think it is much more difficult to learn good heat treating for several steels than to learn forge welding pattern welded steel.

And it seems that more people are going different ways in blademaking. Self made steels (tamahagané style), sandwich constructions, exotic alloys and so on. Diversification seems to be the parole of today.

When, where, and how much is the class? The expierence you could gain from this class would probably be priceless! I had not heard about it.

Sorry I just found the answer to my own question. I must have overlooked the class before. The class will be held at the ABS school. Oct 29th thru Nov. 2nd. I would love to attend but my wife is expecting during that time frame.

You're right Larry, who wouldn't want to learn from Don?

Just the air-fare from Washington is big...but with this new price war I might be able to manage it.

But you were supposed to keep it quiet so I'd have a spot left ;)

Well that just answered that. I called and the Intro to Bladesmithing class is full. I would have to take that class to take the damascus class...so I'm out :(
