Can someone explain in simplicity what or how damascus can improve a blades properties. I am confused as to how 2 very differing steels can be layered to improve a blades edge. In particular edge retention and toughness (chipping resistance) together. How do you know what balance you will obtain with differing combinations?

Seems to me some combinations could be nothing more than a labor intensive mess. 1095 and 4340 do not seem compatible yet One person have chatted with uses that combo. Looks pretty in a pattern but I have my doubts. Guess I'll have to get one and see if there is a minimal success or an aforementioned "mess". Only so called damascus I have ever had was one by Marbles and it was JUNK. Blade would not sharpen well at all and chipped like crazy.

B Blackcloud generally speaking damascus isn't any improvement over mono steels blades...
It's all about how it looks. A damascus blade will do the job, no doubt, but it's not higher performing than a single steel blade. All specs being equal anyway.

I always describe it as the difference between Heidi Klum and Julia Childs. They are equally famous women but Hedi is more about the look.
