I'm wondering how good damascus is at holding an edge. Is it comparable to vg-10, or aus8, or aut34, d2 etc.? Is there such a thing as damascus made with very hard steels, like for instance s30v and d2? I want to buy a custom bowie with damascus, but i know it will cost a lot of $$$. I want it to be sharp and stay that way, even though i will not use the knife very much, for $1000 or more, i'd certainly want it to be very sharp and a good cutting tool as well as beautiful.

Thank you

Charlie

The term "Damascus" referes to a process more than it does an actual steel. As you probably know, damascus is made by putting two or more different steels together.

So just saying "damasucs" is far too vague. The properties of a specific knife depend on the steels it's made from, as well as the geometery of the blade and the heat treatment.

S30V and D2 are not hard. Whatever hardness they attain comes from the heat treat.

Most pattern welded steel is made from non-stainless steels, but there are some stainless versions as well. I am not sure what steels are used to make them.

Pattern welded steel that is made to perform rather than just to look good can hold an edge extremely well.

Buy a knife off of Jens Anso in Damasteel. The Rose pattern he uses is breath taking, and the two steels in the damascus are RWL-34 and a powder steel version of 12C27, he has a professional heattreater and they undergo a cryo cycle. The end RC is 60ish. I've been using one of his Damasteel knives for a little over a week now, I've used it for everything, and the edge holding has really impressed me. It's better than other varieties of damascus I've used.
