Are all modern damascus blades just etched with that pattern? Or are there some real modern damascus blades that are a true melange of steels?
 
all modern "damascus" is pattern welded steel.


That fake etched crap is only on garbage knives from china and pakistan.
 
There are a number of makers who are using wootz as well, which creates patterns without folding. It is sometimes referred to as "true" damascus. It doesn't look like pattern-welded or canister damascus. And there are also meteoritic materials that can be heavily figured.
