For any of you damaskus knife owners,do you use them?I have been thinking of getting a damaskus fixed blade but I don't want a safe queen. If damaskus gets scratched up can it be refurbished?
I got a bottle of ferric chloride from Radio Shack and mix it with apple cider vinegar. This etching solution will take care of scratches or loss of the pattern from use.
That said, my damascus blades are small dress slipjoints, so they don't get much use anyway.
A damascus blade can be scratched but it won't necessarily show as much as scratch on a smooth, polished blade.
This basketweave damascus bladed Large Sebenaz has been used quite a bit, but you have to look closely to see the scratches. The damascus bladed Stider SMF I've not used.

I have a couple "user" damascus blades by Chris Peterson (Salina, Utah). He's a hunter/mountain man type and makes many damascus knives for field use. Mine are very good cutters. Used them on everything from feral hogs to elk. If they get stained, I clean them with Flitz (and 0000 steel wool, if necessary)
