I've got a damasteel knife that I put some scratches on the ricasso area with a cloth that must have had something in it.

The knife is etched and bolsters and scales are on and 95% finished. I've also etched my name on the blade.

My question is: Does anyone know how I can get these freakin scratches out without messing up my etched blade?

Can I lightly coat the one side of the blade with Muriatic Acid which is what I originally etched the blade in? If this in fact is the way to go what would I coat the bolsters and other hardware with to prevent it from being affected by the acid?

Thanks for any help you can give.

You can protect the rest of the blade with heavy axle grease and build a dam of grease around the area that you want to re etch.

Use a Q-tip dipped in etchant and neutralize after. I do this all the time. Reblue or rebuff as nessary. Throw that rag away!!!

I don't think I want to use a grease on the bolsters as it would be a problem keeping it off the handle.

I've heard people using clear nail polish to protect areas when etching with ferric chloride. Would this also work with muriatic acid?

Ya I was thinking of just touching things up with a Q-tip. Definitely that cloth is going in the garbage!
