Damasteel Etching

Hi,
I’m making a folder with damasteel bolsters. Do I need to heat treat the bolsters to get a good etch?
I’m using muriatic acid for the etch. Is there anything better?

I know Todd Begging uses ferric chloride to do his etch!!! There are videos on YouTube with him doing an etch!!!

Yes, the contrast is poor if done without heat treatment.

The ferric needs to be heated also…
