Damasteel Handbook: a super reference

Damasteel AB the Swedish makers of powder metal pattern welded damascus steel also offer a really excellent handbook which is well worth reading for anyone interesting in knifemaking metalurgy.

http://www.damasteel.se/

The book is in english and costs around $20. It's filled with diagrams and illustrations not only about the Damasteel products - which also look really great - but about the history and evolution of Damascus steel in general.

The website is also worth bookmarking.

Nice site, and the people there are friendly to knife nuts too!

I'll visit this site from time to time. Now if only I could get them to sell a book about Solingen steel (including markings), they would be my favorite site.

Has anyone ever run across a price list for Damasteel? I might be interested if I could figure out what they want for it. I've been on the two sites listed for the US and Canada and haven't found a price yet.

Try sending an email to Michael Walker in Taos NM, he is the US rep listed on their site, and he will send you a price list. It runs from $3.50 to $21.00 an inch depending on which size and pattern you are interested in.
Hope this helps,
Mike C
ps. He will also send you some info on how it is made along with hints on grinding and etching the material.

Take in a starving dog and make him prosperous and he will never bite you, this is the main difference between a man and a dog.

I just thought I should mention that there is a new site for customers in Europe, who are interested in Damasteel. They have Damasteel in stock, and the new English version of the Damasteel handbook (great bedside reading). The site is quite new, and I don´t know if the English version is up yet. But they have an Email form on the Swedish index page, that you can use if you want email notifications about updates.
The URL is http://euroedge.net
