Damasteel or some other stainless damascus...

A friend of mine wants to machine some rings out of stainless damascus. He could do this with a couple of 1.25" squares of it. Does anyone have some scrap or bolster-sized chunks that they could part with for a reasonable price or trade?

I have also had this idea. Hw could spend $55 dollars for a pair of mosaic bolsters from koval knives and make a real nice matched pair. I don't think that they are stainless though. But stainless damascus is only 15-20 dollars an inch so it might not be too expensive. Try www.kovalknives.com

Damasteel makes a special grade of their Damascus just for jewelry and other applications where the steel doesn't have to be hardened. It's available in several different patterns and sizes. Check with them directly on their website, I can't find the bookmark right now, but it comes up fast on a search.

Very cool, thanks. I was looking at the rings at http://www.mokume.com the other day when my wife saw them. She made some very pretty sounds. So for our five year mark that's coming up, I thought I'd make us some new bands, either of mokume or damasteel.

Howdy Oz,

My wedding band is a Mokume band from Steve Midgett from the web site you mentioned above. If anyone is thinking about Mokume jewerly, this is the guy to get it from, great to deal with.

The point I was getting to was, if you go to his site he has a new book out. This book is the definitive book on Mokume and how to make it. I would consider it the Mokume bible. Anyway he has about five projects in the back of his book on how to make jewerly with Mokume. Three projects are for making rings, one braclet and one pendant project. He makes them from a piece of round stock or square bar or large gauge wire then forms them around a mandel and solders it with silver solder seamlessly. I can't find the seam on my ring. I probably couldn't reproduce his results that easily. But, these techniques could probably be used with Damascus. If I'd try it I'd have better luck getting a block of Damasteel and doing it the same way your thinking of doing.

Here's a link where you can get Mokume to make projects with. http://www.reactivemetals.com/rmsbime.htm

Take care,
Tom
