This a copy of a post from the custom knife forums, which Les suggested I repost here:

I have seen reference various places, most recently in 3-99 Blade, to a brand name of pattern-welded steel known as DAMASTEEL. It appears to be a powder metal, and sounds very interesting. If anyone has any information, I would be very appreciative. The e-mail address listed in the add was damascus@newmex.com

Go to the Benchmade website: http://www.benchmade.com/
look under articles, and click on metallurgy. You will find there just how they make particle steel, and Damasteel in particular (no pun intended). Walt

I purchased a sample of Damasteel and ground a small drop point hunter out of it. Heat treated it and then got a very deep etch with muriatic acid over night. You can get information from :

Micael Walker

E- mail: damascus@newmex.com

he is their U.S. sales rep. I had no problem with them or their steel.

I sent for an information packet, so all plans are on hold until then. Ron, do you have a picture of the hunter you ground, and how well does it cut?

Damasteel is the name of a swedish company. They have dealers around the world who sell the steel.
they have a homepage on the following url:
http://www.damasteel.se/

I plan on working with this material soon.

I bought a couple of billets of Damasteel from Walker. One 3/16 and one 1/8 x about 12 inches. About $55 per ft. It's powdered metal stainless damascus. The primary is equavalent to ATS34. The other component is a lesser-carbon formula for contrast. They have several patterns. Mine was called Sparse Twist and was very pretty.

Took them to the Hammer-In at Stouts in New Braunfels, TX last weekend. A collector just drove me crazy asking to buy the 3/16 because Roger Green who was doing the grinding demo told him he would grind him a thin Sheffield Bowie out of it if I'd let him have it.

I finally relented and the guy left with a really pretty Damasteel Bowie about 80% finished. Although it was not heat treated we couldn't resist dropping it in a jar of cider vinegar for 30 minutes to bring out the pattern. It's going to be great when it's finished, I predict.

I haven't made myself a knife in about five years, so I think I'll do a "keeper" out of the 1/8. Probably with some mosaic pins and mammoth tusk handles.

I predict it will be a really good high-tech product with the character of traditional Damascus.

I got the information packet today. I was wondering if anyone has the March issue of Blade. I forgot what the special pricing offer was

I must be doing something wrong, everytime I try to get to damascus@newmex .com I end up at Taosnet and I'm lost from there. Can't seem to find Michael Walker or Damasteel. Whats the secret?

Thanks for the help, I think I finally got it right. It's not my fault, I'm a retired Infantry Senior NCO and I don't talk to my computer very nice. Thats the good news. The bad news is I think I have a knife in my shop thats possessed. If theres anything that can go wrong with it, it has. Anybody know a knifemaking priest that can perform an exorcism in my shop? I know it's just waiting for me to come through the door again.
