Does anyone out there use damasteel stainless damascus? i just recieved another piece and the pattern (odin"s eye) seems to be kind of funky- the pattern is different from one side to the other and seems to change every 3 inches or so. the first piece that i worked was much more regular in the pattern, altho it was slightly different from side to side it still came out looking really good (this was the same "odin" pattern but 5/32 instead of 1/8) I have learned how to treat this material and consider it to be a high performance blade steel as well as looking good but this is the first damascus that i have ever worked with so i am not sure if this pattern break is typical to all mixtures of damascus or did i just get an odd piece? Does anyone else claim a damascus that would match the performance and looks of damasteel ? I am paying enough for this material that it should be the best availible thanks in advance - Chuck

Pstern welded steel , Stainless or otherwise should be consistant, If it's not bitch to the maker. He surely can do better.

The problem in patterning damasteel is that the original block, before patterning, is not square or rectangular, but round. This seems to be due to the production methods (powdermetallurgy). Most likely the patterns are rolled into the round bars and the bars may be turning during the rolling process. So there may be a slight change in the design.
Personally, i buy the round bars directly from Damasteel AB in Sweden, do the patterning and forge them down to the size i need. Round bars are available in 11 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm diametre with flat layers and in 20 mm, 25 mm and 33 mm with concentric layers.

Hope this helped.
