Hi I just found out the exact steel used in my new custom fixed blade. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this steel and what you think of it.

Damasteel RWL34

C 1.05%
Si .50%
Mn .50%
Cr 14%
Mo 4%
V .2%

I was told it is similar to ats34.

Thanks
Randy

Is it damasteel or is it RWL34? Damasteel is damascus that has RWL34 in it. RWL34 is a powder metallurgy ats34.

Damasteel is a combination of RWL34 and PMC27. The chemical composition you gave is for RWL34. PMC27 has .60% carbon, .50% silicon, .50% manganese and 13.5% chromium. It has no vanadium. The RWL34 gives you the bright areas and the PMC27 etches much darker.

I have used a couple of knives with Damasteel blades and I find it to be an excellent steel. It holds an edge quite well and sharpens very easily.

I've got a Greg Lightfoot with Damasteel and I'm very happy with it. Greg tells me it's RC 58. I was wondering what the steel composition was. Thanks for posting it.

I'm dumb:foot: I forgot to add the PMC27specs. Thanks for the info. If my blade was etched it was polished as it doesn't look like there is really any difference in color but you can see the pattern it looks like Hakkapella.

Thanks
Randy

The difference in color depends on who etched it. It's a fairly difficult damascus combination to etch. Of course some people, even if they could get a dark/light combination, choose to just have the PMC27 etched deeper rather than get a color difference.
