Having been on this forum for some time, and having spent years on other similar forums, something just ocurred to me. Any time someone posts one of those: "Which knife/gun/watch etc. should i get" he gets, as you all know, tons of replies with recommendations, but often, the people who reply are quietly criticized for their responses. First, if they own the particular object they are recommending, they are thought to be biased and i have heard it said with disdain, that everone just recommends what they own, and that is somehow a poor, unhelpful response to the question, and is discounted for that reason. BUT, if you recommend an object that you do NOT own, youre thought to be giving an opinion/recommendation without any actual experience of the object youre recommending. So, no matter what you do, when you respond to these types of posts, you just cant win. So, what knife/gun/watch/car/pen/stereo/computer/cordless phone/flashlight/coffee maker should i get, and, most importantly, is Starbucks coffee really worth the extra money, now be honest... :)

Heck no! for the cost of once a day starbucks for a week, you can buy a pound of premium coffee beans, a grinder, and maybe even a coffee machine to brew it up fresh in.
Otherwise, buy a Dozier!:D

"i have heard it said with disdain, that everone just recommends what they own"

Why would someone suggest buying something that they wouldnt purchase. There are different needs for different people I guess, but it seems that the best recommendation is the one made by spending money.

As far as recommending something that one doesnt own, there are those knowledgable enough to see that a certain design is suited to certain things that may be a requirement.

I know I contradicted myself, but I'm just trying to give both sides here. If you solicit recommendations, be prepared to get them, then read and discard or consider them accordingly.

I dont think you are seeing the entire problem. The problem comes from somebody who does not read the question, and only jumps in to post thier favorite model with no regard to the requirements stated by the person asking.

We have all see variations on this type of person, for example:

Q. Hi, Im new and need a heavy duty folder....what should I get.

A. Dude, get a Strider.

Q. Hi, I need a small gents folder to give my 90 year old uncle for church.

A. Dudu, get him a Strider.

Q. Hello, I need a small folder for opening mail at the office, cost should be around 30 dollars as thats all I have to spend.

A. Dude, get a Strider.

You get the point, its the people who reccomend the same stuff everytime no matter what the actual person is needing.

I recommend things that I would buy. Either I have it now or I'll have it later.
If people want to critize me for saying that (for either I own a particular item or not) then be my guest. I don't really care and the person who's listening to the advice should try to figure things out. If he's the one who's having all the critism, thne why ask in the first place?

Well I don't really have that problem since I rarley post recomendations.:p But when I do, it would have to be without experiance since I have no $$'s to buy me goodies.:( I can't even affored a star$ucks coffee!

SO I support the small guys, they need/deserve it more.

Buy AMERICAN and forget the rest!

Great thread! (Dude, get a Strider, LOL, AND I got two:D )

I generally only talk about stuff I own or have used. I sometimes jump in with things I want, but try and post that I do not know first hand. Oh, and I don't believe in an unbiased opinion.

Thanks, Reagan

knife/gun/watch/car/pen/stereo/computer/cordless phone/flashlight/coffee maker eh?

Well since I don't have a great deal of experience in the field I'll just go with what I own (*Grin*)

Knife: Benchmade 805 AXIS TSEK
Gun: Tressitu TZ-99
Watch: Casio Illuminator (cheap, I know, but mine's been running under the world's crappiest conditions for like 6 years...)
Car: '96 Ford Contour
Pen: I'm not big on pens, but Bic works...
Stereo: My computer is my stereo, but otherwise Kenwood is the way to go.
Computer: I custom build my computers, you should too! Those Dell/Hewlett Packard/Gateway/Compaq bastids are not to be trusted!
Cordless Phone: For some reason, my family owns alot of Sonys...
Flashlight: SureFire
Coffee Maker: Classic Mister Coffee baybee!

Jeez, this has quickly degenerated into a what do you own thread... but I'm not one to complain so what the heck?

Knife: Benchmade Mini AFCK
Gun: Smith & Wesson Revolvers... any of 'em
Watch: Fossil Arkitekt
Car: '95 Ford Ranger
Pen: Uniball Vision Fine
Stereo: A computer hooked up to a Kenwood system
Computer: Emachines, they're real cheap!
Cordless Phone: Sony
Flashlight: I just use a Photon Microlight
Coffee Maker: I drink Lipton tea

I'd recommend any of these to anyone.

Well, when i asked what

"knife/gun/watch/car/pen/stereo/computer/cordless phone/flashlight/coffee maker..."

you recommend, i was being facetious, but, since you humored me, i guess its only fair I answer my own question, besides, who among us doesnt like to show off our toys. I would only recommend something i own or have owned.

Knife-Favorite is a WD Pease MOP/ bolster Scroll Engraved folder, NICE! Close second is my Dake MOP Damascus DA folder.

Gun-The one I keep right next to me at almost all times, my Glock 17 W/+2 Floorplate, loaded with 20, yes, 20 rounds of Remington Golden Saber +P. I have guns l like more for their precision and aesthetic appeal, like my Sig 226, but its the Glock i would recommend to anyone for pure function and ruggedness. About 10,000 rounds through it NOT ONE JAM, accurate as the day i bought it.

Watch- What's on my wrist, a Sinn EZM3 leather strap.

Car-99 Chevy Blazer, LOVE it.

Pen-Fisher Space Pen

Stereo-Aragon 8008 Mk2, Aragon 18K Preamp, Cal. Audio Labs Icon Mk2 CD player, Martin Logan SL3 Speakers. MIT cables. (Yes, I'm an audiophile)

Computer-OK, here is where i get embarrassed. 1999 Dell Latitude Laptop with a P2 400 Mhz, 128 MB Ram, and yes, im very close to getting a new Laptop, probably another Dell because this one held up extremely well. Not too many laptops you can spill half a glass of lemonade on its keyboard and have it still run like a champ!

Cordless Phone-I have had good luck with Panasonic.

Flashlight-Surefire Of course! Photon on Keyring.

Coffee maker, a MR Coffee my wife's boss gave her. Free is my favorite price.

And there you have it!

Damed if you do, damned if you don't...
Uhh.. I just popped in to DO something, cuz I wanted to get Damed.
Haven't been with a good Dame in a while... no good broads either, now that I think about it...
But I musta misreaded something or something....

Off to the porno-chatlines, where all the chicks are sexy and hot and stuff,

I only talk about stuff I have actually bought/been given/use.

Knife. Kershaw Ken Onion Vapor. Frame Lock, smooth, good looking, sharp.

Gun. Don't/CAN'T carry. Near my right hand is a Bulgaruian Makarov with 8 rounds of CorBon. It has NEVER failed.

Watch. Do not wear anything like that, rings, neckwear, watches. Had a Timex cheapy. Worked for me.

Car. No TRUCK! '90 F-350 Crew Diesel with Knapheide Utility Body (my office/workshop).

Pen. Fisher Space, rotated with Parker, Papermate and other stuff.

Stereo. There is Sony Home Theater in living room that rarely ever gets powered up. More likely is the JC Penny MCS 3207 over my right shoulder!

Computer. ANCIENT AMD K-5 (around 98 vintage) with 166mhz, 128ram, 5 gigs of space and a dial up 56k modem. Running Win 95.

Cordless Phone. Panasonic and Sony both here.

Flashlight. Mag Micro in left front. Several AA and D lights in truck and around house, many Mag brand.

Coffee maker. Proctor Silex 12 cup is all we need! HAVE NEVER HAD and WILL NEVER HAVE Starbucks. High priced BS!!!

When I was first starting out in this knife maddness I was talking to a dealer on the phone and was given the best advice. "Buy what you like and buy the best that you can afford." This came from Patrick at Triple Aught Design, now known as TADGEAR. Thanks Patrick.

Well, I figure I'll join in the fun:

Knife: Benchmade 710.

Gun: I don't own one, although I'd like a M1 Garand.

Watch: A Nixon Footsoldier, I love it! It's invincible.

Car: I have a Hyundai Accent. It gets the job done...

Pen: A Sheaffer Fountain Pen

Stereo: I've got a Pioneer Receiver from the late 70's or early 80's. It's coupled with an old TEAC Cd player. Runs through a pair of homemade speakers with Marantz woofers and a second pair of Acoustic Research bookshelf speakers. Homemade CAT5 speaker cable.

Computer: Compaq Presario 5461. It's got a K6-2 500. It needs to be replaced.

Phone: Sony

Flashlight: Surefire E2 Executive, I want an E2E and an M2

Coffee Maker: I try to stay away from caffeine..

:D

There is a problem when it comes to knife recommendations. Questions get lots of responses, but often by people who are not knowledgeable on a certain topic. I’ve seen quite a few responses on knife recommendations that just weren’t good answers, no matter how you look at them. But when you have as many members as BladeForums does, you do get some people who are “instant authorities” on knife use, no matter what level of personal experience they’ve had, or common sense they possess.

I’m not saying that members should not make recommendations, but not if they have very little knowledge on the subject. A few very good recommendations are much more valuable that a plethora of bad ones. I personally refrain from making knife recommendations in areas that I have no experience with. I’ve never made a machete recommendation, and probably never will. I don’t use machetes.

I do ask for recommendations from time to time, and get lots of responses. Fortunately, I’ve come to trust certain good people in their knife advice. I listen to these people first. I don’t disregard the other recommendations, but they do not have as much weight in my final selection.

I never recommend fixed including machetes. My machete is a South American (I think Brazil-not in front of me here) with a knarly wood handle made big round and curvy. It does what I need a machete to do.

I would have no idea how to tell anyone to get one!

Similarly I won't say a peep about autos or ballisongs - ain't got any! (except one cheap China auto on the desk for letter opening)

Also, I think most folks by now know I'm a poor CHEAP Bastid. My recommendations are as such.

Also from my above post so clarification.

The left front lite is a Mag Solitaire (not Micro).
The Makarov cost me $150 and is the best damn cheap gun there is!
Some really nice cheap pens are Sanford!
Anyone remember when Pennys SOLD stuff like guns, stereos, tools with THEIR name on them? My JCP 3207 is from 1976!
Sony Phone and Panasonic phone here at the "home office" (not my house) I can't say who made our cordless at home, but it works SUPER!
And coffee. I'm a picky bastid. Folgers Red Can, two slightly heaping scoops for 12 cups. Don't like the coffee much of anywhere else - find it too strong (do have one suppier where the lady makes jam up java!)

Anyhow, when I recommend something - I KNOW what I'm talking about baby!

That seems to be the case most often :( Offer advise or
post a topic with some originality ( NOT like : "Got my Kershaw
whirlwind today..." ) and enter the detractor(s) by the drove!
Oh well.

AET ;)
