When I was 16-17 I worked at an ice cream/burger joint for the summer. The bossman Jim Osbourne was showing me how to use the deli slicer and he sliced off a 2mm deli thin piece of his palm. I almost puked right then and there. So much blood...
:( :barf:

I took the side of my thumb, part of the nail included, with a mandolin at my former job. Had to have it cauterized, the treatment was worse than the cut:eek:. I can post some gory pics if you like.:barf::D

Uh, no thanks, Vinnie. We'll take your word for it.

Never use a mandolin or a grater by hand. Always use a pusher, even if you have to rig one.

Oh yeah that thing... I always imagine myself mangling my finger with it, so I'm veerrry careful with it in real life. No accident with it thus far....

Hope you heal quick man. :)
Heck , you shoulda used a knife ; they're a lot safer

I wonder if a mandolin would be a good fatwood slicer? Ohh , never mind :foot:

God the thought of getting this cauterized is making me ill lol!!!! It bled for like 6 hours and I'm hoping when I change the bandage tomorrow it's done for good !!!! A knife is much safer !!! I should have used the pusher , and normally would but I was just testing it out!!!! A family member was actually reading the instructions out loud , and as he muttered out the words " do not use without guard" slice!!!!! There it went !!! Couldn't have been planed any better .....

first time I ever used one I took off a dime sized chunk from the side of my pinkie - and that was using the pusher/guard thing!
I've been much more paranoid/careful since and it's saved me some time on food prep a couple of times where I was cooking for a crowd - but it doesn't get used often because the thing just makes me nervous. (awesome tool for making matchstick potatoes, though)

My old mandoline sits lonely in the corner. My new one has spring loaded blades that are raised by the guard passing over. It also has a spring loaded holder for the vegetation.

It is very safe.

I have been bit a couple of times by the old one. Never by the new one.
