I dont know why i thought the pen knife would be bigger.
When I opened the box, i thought Uncle sent me a bilton by mistake.
How can this little thing do all the stuff you guys say it can do ?
I like the handle, especially the classy looking pommel. (I wish all hi pommels were like that)
Bura stuff is solid gold.
Cho creep is minimal. (7/16 from bolster)
I like it, but it sho is tiny!

once you get a bilton, you'll know what tiny is :D

the bilton is only really good for cutting, if you try to chop with it, you'll kill your inner fingers due to the 3 finger grip...

funny thing, if you get a lot of smaller khuks, like a 12" ak, 12" sirupati, pen and a bilton, and dont pick up the larger khuks,

the larger ones seem so insanely huge when you try them again... especially the handles. when i picked up my 20" ang after weilding the 12" for a few days, i went "wwwhoa... them handles are THICK", wich i didnt notice before...

one of these days i'll need to pick me up a pen knife :) lots of varied comparisons to the ang, half saying it chops better, half saying it slices better...

Smaller khuks can't do as much work- chopping, anyway.

Personally, I've wondered if there really is much difference once you start workig with khuks weighing around a pound. If a Pen cut better than a Bilton or 12"AK I'd suspect it was because of marginally more weight and reach.

Raghorn swears his Chiruwa's cut as good or better than 18" AK's; I don't know that is true, but for Raghorn it seems to be.

The Pen is our version of a pocket knife...the one you always have with you. If you camp, when everyone else walks back to their truck for their ax to chop firewood, we grab our pocketknife and have our fire going before they even get back. It *does* cut out of proportion to it's size. Besides that Danny, only a true Khuk nut would call the Pen tiny..:-)

I think that that is it. The Pen knife has that big blunt tip that is really wide. Mine also outweighs the AK but a a few ozs. It is also way more heavy in the front than my 12" AK. My 12" AK will chop, but you have to put more force behind it. The pen knife has that heavy tip.

Mine chops up to about 3 or 4" pretty well. Not like an 18" er or anything, but good for it's size.

Yep, they're cute. Fer small khuks that'll chop and cut, I like the fanciness and pointiness of the Balance model. 13 inches, slightly bigger handle.

I consider the Bilton more of a bent sheath knife than a khuk. Kinda like the Himalayan version of a kerambit--khuk-shaped, but kerambit size.

Perhaps the Pen knife is fer Takako?

Man is that true. Most people would have a minor heart attack with its size. Hey Danny what are the knife laws like in Japan?

I think that Pen Knife falls into the same category as the Marbles Belt Axe in terms of chopping. It will chop within limits, but you wouldn't want to log jackpine with it. However, for those unexpected chopping tasks it is more likely to be found available on your belt than a 25" AK.

I've never had a Marbles Belt Axe but I'd compare it to the GB Mini. I think the Mini will cut deeper with each stroke, but the larger cutting head on the Pen Knife makes it a bit more efficient, plus you have the knife aspect that the mini doesn't have.

Knife laws here are pretty much the same as in america.
Except, they dont really have police who care, so its not a big issue.

Swords can only be made in japan swords, so that comes down to an import ban.
they call them art swords and require a license that is permanently attached to the saya.(same goes for big spears and halberds)

By the way, the pen knife now belongs to Takako.
She says "its cute..."

I know exactly what you mean, Danny. When i opened up my PK a couple weeks ago i was a little unimpressed by the size of the thing. Then i took it out and used to break down a few skids in the wearhouse. The thing will out-perform its size by a larger margin than i would have thought. I love my big monster Khuks. They're cool to have around for those big jobs. But as far as a practicle camp knife goes, i think they're hard to beat in their weight class. They can do pretty much the same thing as the larger khuks except fell trees and decapitate bears.

Here's a link to some pics of a pile of firewood I cut up with the Pen Knife. None of it is huge wood, but it shows the Pen knife can cut up campfire wood.

Thanks, HD:)

Most impressive! Well, i retract my statement. You CAN fell a tree with a Pen-Knife:) You also might be able to decapitate a bear with one too, but i wouldn't want to do it;)

Thanks for the pics!

Me too! I have more and more blades with the sharp edge on the buttcap. I hate to file them down because then I damage the handle which has to be refinished. I know they fit perfectly at one time, it's just the inevitable shrinkage, esp. on the horn. The pen knife buttcap is really a nice thick touch.

Norm
