After thinning out my entire Spyderco collection (Sage 2, Para 2 camo, Persistence, Tenacious, Ladybug) I was looking for a slim edc knife. Nothing wrong with Spyderco's. the Para 2 are awesome at $125. The Persistence is a great knife for $25. but a bit tall open or closed for a small edc knife for me(open packages/letters/small cutting).

Then i bought my 1st Kershaw Leek 1660CKT several weeks ago. What a fantastic choice. I appreciate that the Leek is made in the USA. There is nothing wring with paying less for made elsewhere. But with the harder times in economy, I am willing to pay up and favor American made products that prove to be higher quality.

Yes the blade is thin, delicate, and scalpel sharp. Just how i need my edc blade to be. I don't live and work in rural areas. I am in NYC. no bush-crafting here. The needle tip is great for stripping out all those UPS labels on the box from Amazon so I can re purpose them for my own shipping.

And its just a sexy svelte knife. true gentlemen's folder. I also love the safety lock. If i am wearing a sport coat or suit i can easily carry this in the pocket locked without have to worry about blade retention. the Leek just disappears!

I love the Leek and flipper concept so much that i just ordered 2 more to be pimped out. The 1660G10 S30V for my gf (pimpage = Pink digi camo handle/foliage green blade). And the Random Leek reverse tanto serration S30V for myself (pimpage = Arctic camo handle/black blade).

Because i was so impressed with the Leek/Kershaw quality, i also invested $260 in the ZT 0560 and will review that later once i get some real usage. But i cannot imagine needing to use that for letters/boxes. The 0560 is basically my Ferrari of knives of any i have ever owned. I hope to bring with me on summer hiking/camping trips. I doubt you all need to see another 0560 review cutting paper :)

tell me some thing. I got told that new york knife laws say no to flick knifes and I got told that is only in new york city. do you know any thing about this just in case I want to come and vist your state?
I just dont want to go to jail over a stupid law and that is why I am asking.

I am no lawyer but i hear that anything over 4" is a no no. Also any double edge blade is a no no. Switch blades/automatic are also no no. If you were ever dragged into court for possession of an illegal knife, it would be lawyers battling if an assisted opening knife = automatic. or if a flipper is an automatic knife.

If you are a tourist and bring a flipper with or without assisted opening under 4" long blade, i doubt you will get in trouble. worst case you get caught up in a random bag check point and they confiscate the knife. But that can happen to anyone with even a razor blade these days.

If it makes you feel any better, i carry my Leek on me in manhattan. as well as an urban pal.

My advice is to just blend in with your clothing. Don't dress like a hunter or have camo pants and bag. that is asking to be pulled into a "random" bag check.

Manhattan DA seized knives from a number of places including Home Depot. Their razor blade cutters used for cutting sheet rock and such could be opened one handed so they classified them the same as a switchblade. They levied huge fines against a lot of large retailers basically as extortion with the threat of prosecution. They also contacted a number of retailers that were shipping to New York. A number of retailers stopped shipping to any addresses in New York State because most items would pass through NYC on the way to their destination. I think most of this has settled down and retailers have started shipping to New York again.

There is a bunch of info here: http://www.akti.org/action/call-to-...ct-da-confiscates-legal-knives-from-retailers

I lived in NY for 25yrs and I wouldnt bring one of assisted knives with me when I go visit. Cops don't really care what you have to say they just take it and that's that..and they're so many different laws its just not worth it. Why I love bring in NC now..I can buy and carry alot.

There a number of threads that cover this in great detail. A search should turn them up, and it's an important guide to safe handling in the Big Apple.

One other note. Don't use the pocket clip. It's a give away. If you just carry a knife in your pocket and don't act in a provocative manner, you should be okay.

My suggestion is always a SAK. Not foolproof, but the epitome of the friendly knife. And if its taken, the loss is modest.

damn new york sounds a little strict, which sucks because once i went assisted opening and got my first knife, the kershaw blackout... i could never go back to manual opening knives, and as a recovering addict, i know when im addicted... so good luck goin to new york or doin whatever it was you wanted to do, i hope you dont get arrested!!

Like i said. just blend in and don't bring attention to yourself. a fixed blade is ok under 4" last time i checked. However as i have also said, they can prob get you for having metal chop sticks in your bag. Just dont strap an Esee 4 to your camera bag :)
