This past week, I received a knife from a new custom maker who is apprenticing with Dylan Fletcher of Fletcher Knives: Damon Lusky. He recently listed a few of his first pieces, and I picked up the AK-1. I had a chance to test it out and break it in a little bit this weekend. First, here are some specs:
Steel: 5/32" O1 - 60-61 RC (exact same HT as Fiddleback and Fletcher Knives)
Grind: Saber Convex
Blade length: 4.5"
Handle length: 4.75"
OAL: 9.25"
Handle material: canvas micarta w/ red liners
I bought the knife without a sheath (he offers kydex), because I wanted to see if it would fit the BRKT Bushcraft A sheath from KSF. It fits great, and they look good together. The handle is very comfortable with subtle curves that feel good in the hand. I'm a modder, so I already did some tweaking of the pommel end of the handle near the spine to fit my fat palms (for example, the Fallkniven F1 was really uncomfortable for me in that part of the handle). The flats of the blade have the scaling from the HT, which looks awesome. The balance on the knife is great, and it feels very light in use. The edge was convexed well, although I thinned it out a little and touched up the tip a little bit for my preference (this isn't really a knock - I would rather have the edge too thick to begin with than too thin).

I decided to make a little fire for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows for my kids, so after we gathered up our pile of twigs and branches, It was time to split some of it down:

It blasted through some slightly gnarly stuff with no problem. Right after that, it was time to make some tinder curls (with no resharpening between):

After piling up enough feather curls, I set up the fire and used the spine of the knife with my ferro rod, and got it rolling. (Sorry- no pics here. It took two hands...)

After all this, it was still making curls like a champ. I'm a fan. The future is bright for Mr. Lusky. I would definitely recommend this blade, especially for the price. Thanks, Damon!
