I'm curious to hear comments on Dan Burke's knives manufactured by Queen. The blade steel on these knives is 12C27 stainless. I would love to hear from people who have used it, how the blade steel preforms, holds an edge, resharpens, and F&F.

I've been considering the 3-1/4" stockman or warncliff whittler. At this point my only apprehension is that the knives are on the small side for me, as I generally prefer a 3 7/8" to 4" knife. Although I will say that I have recently incorporated a 3 1/2" gunstock into my rotation and enjoy carrying it.

I have three but they all have BG-42 steel and I carry/use them. (English jack, Dr, and Cattleman's).

Next to the annual Case Bose collaborations I feel they are the best production knives out there (slipjoint wise). I have not tried any of the ones in 12C27 though.

425M - 12C27 Both are very similar to 440A. 425M (.5% carbon) is used by Buck knives. 12C27 (.6% carbon) is a Scandanavian steel used often in Finish puukkos and Norwegian knives.

Bastid beat me to it, I think the current offering is a equal end type slipjoint but it does have BG-42 steel. This steel is a favorite of many users. Great steel.

I'm sure someone who owns one will chime in soon.

Me too!. It doesn't get much better, IMO..

Buck hasn't used 425M for a number of years. Their current standard alloy is 420HC, which they harden to 57-59 HRC. How it will perform compared to the 12C27 will depend on how hard the 12C27 is run.

Bark River uses 12C27.

I think that's a great endorsement.

(But I'm not equating 12C27 with BG-42, which is a superior blade steel in virtually all respects.)

My experience is the same as Bastid's.

I have only carried the BG-42 knives, but they are all great.

I have a Dan Burke/Queen wharncliff half whittler with 12C27. I like it. . . .and I'm not Mikey. :D

When it comes to 12C27. . . .I find it easy to sharpen and surprised how well it holds an edge.

PJ Tomes also uses 12C27. If it's good enough for him. . . . .it's good enough for me! :p

It is quite small at 3 1/8 "

The stockman at 3 1/4" has longer blades.
It is the same pattern as the Queen in D2, but with the lovely Winterbottom bone.
The F&F is very similar

I really appreciate the comments on Dan Burke's knives and the blade steels. I have limited first hand experience with the BG-42 blade steel, as my only experience using that is my sebenza. The sebenza is whole different kettle of fish that I use when in the field. I agree the BG-42 takes and holds an incredible edge.

I like that the 12C27 is the preferred steel of steel of PJ Tomes. A maker whose work I really like. After hearing your very positive (first hand) comments, I'm ready to give it a try.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Rick, Better have Dan call this ole boy here and tell'em that Queen didn't use 12C27 on his named knives....

PS, I forgot another ole boy here......

I really like that knife. It was a little too pretty pricey for me though.

Me too. The problem was that it came out a couple of years two early. When it was available I was not yet at the point where I was comfortable spending over $50 for a slipjoint. I've since overcome that psychological hurdle. The problem is that the DB Rancher is no longer available.

For what its worth, according to Dan, at the Queen manufacturing plant in Titusville, the Burke winterbottom line are built with Sandvic 12C27 blade steel.

I got one of those, a two blade trapper, I'm not sure if that's the kind of steel used for the blades, the knife is fairly well built but it took me a good two hours to get those blades properly sharpened. I hate knives delivered with dull blades; but that's me.
