I picked this up from Dan at the Chesapeake knife show. The knife is a beaut and very comfortable. 5-1/2" convex ground 5160 forged blade, 10-1/2" OAL, nickel silver guard, leather and n/s spacers, and olivewood handle. Photo's courtesy of Dan.

I was truly fortunate with this because Dan was totally booked when I emailed him only 6-8 weeks ago. I saw on his site that he was going to be at the Chesapeake show and wanted to know if he might have a #1 hunter there. Turns out he was working on one. So during our communication, I remembered a piece of olivewood I bought that was sitting on my night stand waiting to be made into something. Dan was kind enough to try it out. The result is a unique combination IMO.

I can't tell you how happy I am about this knife. First of all lucking in at the right moment in Dan's schedule where he allowed me to sneak in. Then catching Dan early in his career when his prices are way below what they should be. Add to that one heck of a nice guy. Whew, I'm practically envious of myself.

Okay, I don't think the pic showed up. I'm kinda new at this. Wonder if this'll work.

Sweet. Beautiful figure in that wood.

That worked just fine. Thanks for the picture of another great looking knife from Dan Farr. He is very talented indeed.

That olive wood has fantastic grain.

Congrats on a super looking knife. Nothing like a forged blade with a nice hand rubbed finish and beautiful wood handle. All is right in the knife world when you make a score like that.

I have corresponded with Dan on a couple of occasions and have found it both informative and pleasant. He takes his knifemaking very seriously and the sky appears to be the limit when you look at the quality of work he is putting out compared to the length of time he has been doing it.

The only bad part is the Fighter I have on order won't be picked up until BLADE

Hey, I just happen to have a nice block of olivewood laying around! ;)

Beautiful knife, Grapevine. The figure in that wood is really nice.

I received a fighter from Dan last week that had a walnut handle. I'm not sure how he did it, but somehow he got more character and more life out of that walnut than I've ever seen on a knife. Period. The grain structure has depth and character like you wouldn't believe. I don't know if I just got lucky and he found a great specimen or what, but if your knife has a similarly beautiful finish on the handle then I know you must be absolutely thrilled.

Congratulations on a great purchase!

I know what you mean by Dan bringing out more character in a wood. I think it has something to do with the "30 day finish" he puts on it. I saw the curly maple handles at the show and there was a translucent quality to them. You can see down beyond the surface layers of the wood and it looked like each layer underneath shimers on their own. The olivewood on mine has a more uniform structure though. With it, I don't get that layered effect that Dan can bring out in maple and walnut, but I do get dramatic contrast between dark and light figures. I end up trading the quality of more interesting looking close up for that of better looking from far away.

A great knife by someone that is destine to be one of the great makers. You have fanastic taste in wood. Racer Roy

David,
I really enjoyed making that knife for you. Also it was great getting to meet you and hand you the knife personally. I hope you get a chance to use it and report back. Remember too, I'm here if it ever needs any touch up work.
Thanks,
Dan Farr

That's a very fine-looking knife with a striking wood handle. Love it.

Cheers,

Roger

That's a great one!!! :D

I'm sure I'm not the only who notices that Dan's lines keep getting sharper and more defined...the character of a knife executed with precision. Note how crisp the plunge cut and clip grind are.

Beautiful wood... I'm still kicking myself for not buying a HUGE olivewood burl that I saw at the WoodWorking show here in 2000.

Great knife, thanks for sharing!

Nick

Love the top line of that piece.., and Olive wood doesn't get better than that...thanks for the pictures...
