Does Dan Farr post on Bladeforums?

I've sent him a couple of emails because I want to know more about his competition cutting bowie, but I haven't received a response.

Also, anyone have experience with the man and his knives?

Thank you.

Yes he does. He goes by the user name, sabre.

I really like his competition cutting knife, but when I contacted him about making me one, he told me that he is not taking orders. If I am not mistaken, he told me that he is four years behind on orders.

Yes on both counts.

You can read a bit more about his most recent model competition cutter here:

I recently had the opportunity visit Dan at his shop and try out his competition cutter on several of the ABS cutting tests. I can tell you two things: 1) those cutting challenges are tougher than they look (and every bit as much fun as they look) and 2) Dan's knives cut like the dickens.

P.S. - Keith is right - Dan is not accepting orders at present. Major bummer.

Dan is a great guy, who makes great knives. He's as busy as they come, as with a lot of these guys, I think he may also have been travelling recently.

When I can get my act together I'll post a review of piece I picked up from him recently!

YOU SO TOTALY ROCK ROGER!! I love it when customers start whacking away with their knives.

So.......how many ropes fell to the mighty Roginator :D

Well, you see that three-rope bundle on the ground? Yes, you guessed it. Dan cut that. :o I got so that I could cut one rope clean just about every time. And I did manage 4 water bottles in what was surely my best event. The dowel utterly defeated me.

And I must confess that I was using Dan's knife. Believe me, he gave me no ends of grief for leaving mine at home - I believe the term "wuss" was used - but in truth, I didn't want the border hassles.

Having attempted multiple ropes, I still can hardly believe you managed 4 Bailey - must be that swordsmanship coming through.

Roger

Ranges,
I'm sorry for the lack of response! Thanks for your interest. I cut at the Ohio hammer-in this past weekend, Didn't cut too well, but Dickie Robinson did well in all events and won by a good margin.
I can't take any orders now, but I will have some knives at the ABS Reno show in January. I picked up a couple pieces of stag in Ohio, might try a stag/fighter for the show.
Just got back from a hunting trip to the Tirol in Austria, where I tested the mountain hunter model. Knife worked great, legs turned to rubber! Did a knife forging demo while there.
Bailey, you are close, but at least Roger is whacking away with someone else's knives. I even let him cut with my Fisk! Roger is cool, now if we could get some of those knives out of the safe....

Hey Roger!
Great shot. you look like a pro!
Dan is the best reason to go to shows. He is a very talented bladesmith, and an even greater guy in person. He is backed up like crazy, but he always pulls off some incredible stuff for a show. He has been instrumental in leading the way for me. From encouragement, to to show how, he has had a huge influence on my own bladesmithing carreer.
If you can get a Farr knife, get one. They are unmatched in value, and NOBODY can work a walnut handle like Dan.
Adam.

Looking good Roger!

Dan Farr is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. If you get the chance, go up and introduce yourself and you will have met a friend. I was at a Hammer In a couple of years ago and asked Dan a question. We spent about an hour talking about handle design. He is a very generous person about helping others and there are no "secrets". His input has helped me alot when it comes to knife design. The 4 year wating list is evidence of the high standard of quality in his knives. Lin Rhea

I'll just say the exact same thing that anyone who has ever met him says:
Dan is a kind, generous, thoughtful, friendly guy who also happens to be an exceptionally talented bladesmith. He has also been a teacher and mentor to many beginning bladesmiths, hobbyists, and enthusiasts, always giving so much of himself to the craft and the people involved. He is very highly regarded by collectors, dealers, and his bladesmithing peers alike, often receiving high praise from the some of the most recognized names in bladesmithery. :)

I would recommend him and his work to users, collectors, and even some of his fellow makers - he sets a fine example!

Dan is hardworking, creative and always looking to try something new. Also, as has been said previous, he is very giving in his knowledge and time. I have known Dan for a few years now and have had the privledge of visiting his shop and learning some basic knifemaking skills from him.

As far as getting a knife from him, my advise is to hit the show EARLY! He sold out in Atlanta real quick. Another thought is to keep your eye on Les' site as Dan's knives appear there from time to time.
