Dan,

Let me start off by saying I understand that you are terribly busy right now, and I appreciate the amount of quality work you put into your knives for us. I thought that starting a post on this might be the best way to get a hold of you, but I can call or email if you'd prefer, just let me know and I'll "change channels"

Now to my question….I've got a musk ox skull that that I had sitting around while I was trying to figure out a good use for it. Well, one of my dogs decided that he'd eat the snout portion off of it, and now I'm kind of limited as to what I can do with it. I was thinking about having knife handle material made out of the horns. I've seen it on knife handles and think it looks pretty good, and think a Nessmuk with musk ox horn handles would be awesome!

I don't know if it would be doable, or even good material for the project, but would you be interested in trying?

Thank you for your time,
-Eric

LOL, you're having the same trouble with you dogs that I'm having with my cats. My little kitten decided to put her dental record all over my PSK sheath. :( Looks like a cool project.

Only if it was cut up and stabilized first.

Horn can be a real bear to work with....it will literally warp while you are shaping it...(let alone the shrinking that could happen days/weeks/months later).

Mike at WSSI (www.stabilizedwood.com) can probably stabilize it for you if you can find someone locally to cut it into slabs.

I'd shoot for something like 5" long and 1.5" wide since it might possibly shrink during stabilizing.

Hope I didn't come across as too off-ish....

I'm ok using it for handle material...just under the proper conditions.

I've used merino horn before and the stuff drove me nuts - I ended up tossing it in the trash. It wasn't stabilized. I don't want to go through that again. :o

Give me a holler if you get it figured out.
