If you're not a true cichlid geek, some of this might confuse you. Feel free to ask:
A couple of weeks ago my wife just wiped out a couple of tanks by using an aerosol cleaner way too close to them. In one tank we had light blue mbuna, and the other with a Tropheus who just wouldn't let any of it's tankmates live..... except for a couple synodontis catfish.
So, for sweetest day, she gave me a gift cert. to a really cool aquarium store in town, with a note on it that said "Nothing too aggressive", because in both tanks there was only one mean cichlid inhabitant, the last man standing.
So, I start thinking about what I want to put into this tank, and Rasbora Heteromorpha comes to mind, since I've always like schooling fish, and with the water being so hard here in Ohio, I try to stay away from tetras, or anything South American, for that matter..
Of course, when I get to the store, I start looking at cichlids, and one thing leads to another, and who I am kidding, it's like thinking you're going to leave a knife show empty handed, NOT!.
I looked over my choices........ and I ended up decided a few Haplochromis Acei, a very mild-mannered fish, for Africans that is, and it turns out these are schooling cichlids with very pleasant colors. I think I'm going to stick with these for a while. It appears that I only have one or two males (can't quite tell, they're still a little young) and 4 females, so I might have some babies on the way, and that's always loads of fun. In the long run, If I ever get a bigger tank, I might add some electric yellows and maybe some placidochromis, nothing too aggressive....
But as of right now, I'm pretty happy!
