They were "playing games" online, and now my 'puter acts kinda funny.

I have a Yahoo toobar I cannot get rid of, and IE and AOHell are slow to load, like 5 minutes.

Windows XP, SP2, 2G ram.

AVG, Spybot find nothing.

I read about disabling system restore and running the anti-stuff, but am afraid to mess somethign up and end up totally hosed.

Any suggestions??

online games aren't really a bit deal and shouldn't affect your computer too much.

looks like you have yahoo toolbar installed onto your computer which may be affecting the speed/performance of the computer. you have plent of ram and i'm assuming your processor is decent so i'll think that there is some other things which are affecting the computer.

i'm assuming you have internet explorer 7 (if you've been doing your updates) and i will try and explain how to remove the toolbar.

you can remove yahoo toolbar via the control panel.

1.Click the Windows "Start" button.
2.Select "Control Panel" from the "Settings" menu.
3.Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs".
4.Scroll down and click on the "Yahoo! Toolbar" entry.
5.Click on "Change/Remove."
6.Close any open IE windows.

if that doesn't help improve the speed of the computer you may have other things running in the background affecting the performance of the computer.

please try this and post again with results.

cheers

Did that, said Yahoo toolbar had already been deleted, and I could just remove from the add/remove list.

I did, but still there.

Soo, I went to Program Files, and deleted everything Yahoo.

Gone now. Still listed under toobars on IE (6.0.2900.2180 - not 7 yet, still too many horror stories floating around).

Will see how it acts now.

Make sure your proccessor isn't tagged out at 90 to a 100%. Pressing ctr+alt+del should bring up "Windows Task Manager". Check down the bottom of window and you'll see "Processes", "CPU Usage" and "Commit charge". If the CPU is running high, click the "Processes" tab and click the header in the "CPU" column twice. This will sort the Proccesses from high to low CPU demand. You can close out that process to see if it fixes the problem.

I have a problem that if I reboot my comp the CPU is pegged out to 100%. "Explorer.exe" is the program that is the culprit. I have to bring up a file explorer type program first because it runs the taskbar and system tray. Once the file explorer is up, I can close it out and restart by going to "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe".

This is a common problem in Windows XP.

have you considered an alternative and possibly switching over to firefox? its a much more cleaner efficient browser if you ask me

I had the same problem with that yahoo toolbar under firefox. I uninistalled it but it still appeared in the browser.
To get rid of it, you have to click some icon on the toolbar (looks like a pencil IIRC) and there is an option to remove the toolbar there.

Good luck with the computer...I messed up mine a number of times when i was younger (around 10-12 years old, im 19 now) and I learned a lot. :D

regedit is the last resort of the damned. If all GUI uninstall options fail, go play with your Registry, just back it up first.

For future reference, you might want to set up a windows "guest account" for any visiting family/friends. If correctly configured, it should prevent them (or any processes they run) from making system changes. Even if they were just playing harmless online games, who knows what those sites were quietly doing in the background.

+1 on Firefox. Takes some getting used to after years of IE, but it offers much more control.

Hell, ditch XP and get 2000/2003 while you're at it :D.

I have been getting an education the hard way about "add-ons", such as the Yahoo Toolbar.

One of the things recommended is to go under Tools>Internet Options>Programs, then click "Manage Add-ons"

Disable all non-Microsoft add-ons, then you can try and bring them back one-by-one to flush out any problems. Of course, that is if your problem is add-ons...

Good luck
