I wonder what it takes to mess up heat treatment of a blade?

Shapening with any grinder without water is obvious, but how about dishwasher? Can you put a quality ss blade in dishwasher and expect it to not dull or loose hardness? How about boiling water, can you pick someout out of a pot? Or a cut a steak that has been on a grill just a moment ago?

Is it same stainless and carbon steel?

/thx in advance for all replys

The absolute minimum temperature to damage heat treatment is around 350F/175C. Neither the dishwasher or any edible food will be close to that temperature. Anything you encounter that hot is likely on fire, this is a good indication not to rest the knife on it for an extended period of time :)

Boiling water won;t affect the heat treatment or temper, Like Yoda says, I don;t think, BUT!: It sure could loosen the epoxy or whatever glue is used for the scales.

yoda and stretch are correct about the heat treat not being hurt by hot water or food. however like stretch said, a dishwasher will get hot enough to remove scales. i had a custom i made go through a wash and steam cycle. you could see where the epoxy melted.

As heat treatment is concerned, hot oil can be higher than 170C
which means it affects simple carbon steel temper.

Maybe many stainless steels and some alloyed tool steels are not affected
as they are tempered at higher temperature.

Most high temperature standing steel is HSS like M2 or M4.
