Just got to playing with some of my favorite small belt knives and thought they made an interesting set:
View
The top one is a Kumar Karda from the late James K. Mattis, with a dangler sheath by Terry Sisco. Next is a Finnish puukko by Iisakki Jarvenpaa, unpolished carbon steel and curly birch. Finally, an original D.H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife, tool steel and rosewood. All great knives, IMHO, reflecting similar (but also different) approaches from the craftsmen of three diferent cultures. (Well, four if you count Oklahoma

- sorry, Terry!)

#2 your pukko vs my CBKC w/ deer handle.

I have always wanted one of those Russel knive's but just never have got around to getting one.
Isn't there another one with a slightly wider blade that they call a skinning knife?

And Berk you're right on about Oklahoma having a culture all its own.
Actually there are several cultures in Oklahoma and not too unlike the caste system in Nepal. But instead of wearing a mark on our foreheads it's the clothes that makes the difference.
You can always tell a `good ol' boy' or `good ol' gurl' by the camo.....

Yvsa,

Take a look at:

http://www.grohmannknives.com/

I have their #4, #1, and #3. My first #1 was ran over with the lawnmover by my father. Cut the knife and sheath cleanly in half. I could not find where the lawnmover blade was damaged from the rock dings. The #4 works best for me and the #1 makes a handy neckknife.

Berkley--nice theme for a grouping of nifty knives. A couple questions: have you had occasion to use the Russell Canadian at a long enough task that you found the ergonomics to be helpful? It's a cool design; I'm just wondering if there's an element of manufacturer hype in the ergonomic claims or you really notice advantages on that score. I've not used one.

And about that T. Sisco sheath--the mouth looks narrower than the widest part of the blade, down towards the tip. So how do you fit the knife into the sheath? What am I missing?

Terry,
I haven't had any problem with the sheath, but since y'all mentioned it I looked closely and realized that the blade has made a number of small scores in the leather. However, it is a double thickness and the cuts don't even go all the way through the inner layer, so it's just a small cosmetic thing on the inside of the sheath. As I said, I hadn't even noticed it before.
I haven't had a chance to use the Russell yet - it's a recent addition, even though it's about 25 years old. I gave my brother a 70's vintage Marble's Ideal for Christmas, and he reciprocated with the Russell last month. It has a great feel to it and I'm looking forward to trying it out when I have the opportunity.
