Lot's of pics of Wes Studis trademark hawk, and reproductionss being made, but it's really hard to find anything except the movies poster for pics of Hawkeye's pipe hawk.
If I am not mistaken they are made by Mr. Winkler, and he has a pic of Magua's hawk and several knives from the movie on his site. Considering how this movie was responsible for a lot of people getting into hawks, (me included, and my google searches brought me to this very sub forum many years ago) I thought there would be a lot of pics or at least more screenshots of it.

I liked the way Hawkeye's knife turned from a shiny single-edge to a black double-edge while he was visiting the infirmary to pick up some silk for patches.

It still is, of course, but this looked like an editing glitch to me, much as I admire the movie. An excuse to watch it again.
My apologies for going off-topic, anyway.

The Tomahawk Hawkeye carried during the movie was by the "script" one he picked up on the battlefield. It was actually a cast Pipe hawk that is commercially available. (At least it was available when the movie was being made.) The Props department did the handles in house. I personally have one that was given to me as a "Thank you" by the Production staff. The Knife carried by Daniel Day Lewis was a forged piece I made from an old saw blade. I actually made 3 as did Randal King for the principal characters he made knives for. One that was used each day during filming, a second as a spare just in case the primary was lost or damaged and a third that was given to the "Special Effects" crew that was used to make molds for rubber and hollow handle replicas.

The illusion of the double edge and black finish was an unintentional lighting effect. Daniel Day Lewis only had 1 knife in the film.

Thanks Daniel, interesting info. I picked up a hawk from ragweed forge years back that caught my eye, just thought it was a similar hawk from the glimpses I got from the film, but I thought that surely they would have some craftsman make one from scratch. Now it seems I may have the same hawk! I had it at work tonight actually trying to clean the lines, it was a little rough from the casting. Does yours look like this one?
