Dan's Arkansas Sticks

I have about 30 Traditional knives all but 2 are folders...some 1095...440c ..cmp154..and s30v. I want to maintain. What attracted you? simple to use. I had crock sticks 40 years ago..liked the way they worked

Arkansas stones should handle the 1095 just fine; but they will have a difficult time with the CPM-154 (or 154CM), S30V and possibly the 440C as well. The carbides in those steels are much harder than the novaculite mineral grit in the stones. If you like the 'crock stick' setup, I'd stick with a set in alumina ceramic; even better if it also includes diamond rods (S30V will benefit from that, and diamond will also make re-bevelling of any edge much easier).

Obsessed with Edges what brands do you recommend

For the ceramic & diamond combination, the Spyderco Sharpmaker and it's optional diamond rods are the most popular. Not cheap, but likely still worthwhile.

A.G. Russell makes a compact 'Field Sharpener' set, which is smaller (4" rods), but includes the diamond rods with the package (in addition to 2 medium ceramics). I've used mine to re-bevel two of my S30V blades (Chris Reeve Sebenza and a Kershaw Leek); in spite of the short rod length, it still works surprisingly well. I also like the default angle setting on the compact A.G. Russell set, at 30° inclusive. Only the one setting, but that's a better angle for most knives these days.

Don't know if any other brands offer diamond rods at all. But quality ceramic sets can be found widely, such as from Lansky or Smiths (A.G. Russell also has a larger ceramic set; I'm sure it's quality).

I would shoot dan's an email and ask what the size of the stones are that are used and also if the sucks can come of the base. If so, $40 for the set, and a pair of cheap diamond stones gives you a decent set up. Maybe velcro or magnets or something so you can interchange stones.
