Hi this is Daqo'tah...
to catch everyone up...
A while ago I made a great knife,,,well sorta,,I sure thought it was going to be great!...I had fired up my new Low Boy forge and used it and my 10# hammer to forge a blade from a John Deere load shaft.
Things were going great for this blade,,,then as I started to grind down the edge after my Heat-treating and tempering, to the final edge, I noticed "DOTS" running all along the cutting edge.
The dots seemed to be little pin holes in the hardened area of the blade. The dot/pin holes, were very small, and ran 1/4 inch up the sides of the blade all along the cutting edge.
Now I ran to my computer and asked everyone here,,,"Whats the deal now?"
and I got many answers and some advice on how to avoid dots in the future.
But today i just thought I would wrap-up my problem for you with the dots and tell you what became of them on the blade.
I decided to place a brass guard and Micarta handle on the blade. then I tossed the blade in a drawer and forgot about it.
well this last weekend I had a guy from work over to my shop to see how to make a knife , and as I was showing him what i do to the steel, I reached for this forgotten blade to show him how the handle fits on.
well he asked to buy the knife right after he saw it, I told him I would try to fix it, but I was not happy selling a blade that was not the best i could do.
I took the blade to the belt grinder and after a few moment, I noticed that I was able to sand-off the dots?!!!
I just worked the sides of the blade down to a point that seems to be "Under" the dots and ended up with a great looking knife again!!!!
so,,,,,the dots were not noticed when I heat-treated the blade I kleep my blades extra thick for the heat-treatmtnts and I looked very closely over the blade when I finished quenching it (3-times)....I did not notice them when I tempered ,,,,I did not notice them when I did that first grinding after the tempering,,,,
But they did pop out at me when I had etched the blade,,,,
this means that the dots were somehow deep inside the steel?
and yet, were able to be sanded away?
Im not sure what made the pots...Im not sure why they happend,,,It might have been something gone wrong in my heat-treatment?..perhaps I got the blade too hot wityh the O/A torch?...
i dont know,,,But alls well that ends well....the blade is on a guys belt this weekend as he hunts deer.....
