How do they achieve that black finish on some of the darkened blades? I would like to try it, but don't know how.

I would appreciate any help.

Well, you have hot bluing solutions, cold bluing solutions, forge grime, and some kind of black titanium-ish coating. I don't remember what it's called, but I'm sure most everyone else here does.

You may have seen this as a by-product of heat treating. My Home Machinist's Handbook recommends coating the part with motor oil and baking at 350 degrees for 10 minutes for a black coating. This actually works pretty well but I've never seen it on a knife. Been thinking about trying it, I'm just not a very prolific maker. :D Remember that no surface treatment will cover up finish blemishes.
