I wonder if Oprah will select this book to replace Million Pieces on her book club list.

Hey, I could point you to a whole website where there's lots more where that came from! :p

By most accounts, the knives are quite good, prehaps maybe not all that some hype might lead you to believe, but quite good. One can argue about whether or not they are priced appropriately or how they compare to other brands, but that does start to get into opinion.

Mr. Stamp's review of Mr. McClung's knives has been the subject of a little bit of controversy.

yes indeed, it is Kevin McClung. Looking at Cliff's review, though, it does seem kind of odd that KM wouldn't return the broken blade, if he wasn't going to give him a new one. Then there was that whole thing where KM deleted Cliff's post and review because he didn't like it, etc

As was Mike Turbers, as was the review by the Polish guys, as was a problem with a broken one reported on recdotknives. They all have the same general pattern, someone reports a problem, McClung widely exaggerates what was done, inferring that any knives would have a problem if so "abused", attacks the people, then starts editing and deleting threads.

Turber's was the silliest because it ended up with claims that the knife was a defect, stolen from his shop and finished and then sold to one of the official dealers and the way the defects are marked in the shop was by a hidden notch under the handle which can only be seen by x-ray on a particular angle.

And no I am not making that up, it is all in the archives. Of course there was no immediate offer to present an actual knife to Turber for the defect that was purchased so the work could be repeated. Nice shape to the knives though and one of the better working grips I have seen. Too bad large and enclosed handles are so rare.

That was a wild ride Cliff. Rember it the secret notch? Was also thought to be an alien key to some spacecraft LOL.

Good to see you are still around Mike, and yeah, McClung tends to have that effect. You have to hand it to him though, he has the ability to sell, he trashed D2 for years as a brittle steel but when I subjected one of his knives and a D2 knife to the same stress he claimed his was abused which is why it failed, and his O1 had a spring drawn spine and the D2 was full hard but yet it didn't have a problem, nor did the $50 Ontario. And he even has Gollnick defending his poor performance as "controversal".

McClung never had a problem berating the performance of other blades or heat treaters, or forgers (all from the safety of forums he moderates of course). He used the fact that an 154CM blade broke under heavy prying during his article on steel selection, and that ATS-34 is chosen because it is rust resistant and cheap. Yet if you take one of his knives and subject it to heavy prying and it breaks then it is abusive, the results are controversal and of course if you live in Poland well the direction to take when responding to the review obvious.

McClung causes the controversy because he uses it as a smoke screen. If you scream and yell loud enough and attack enough people, hopefully they attack you back and then everyone forgets that the original topic was the lack of performance of the knife. Then you can later edit and delete the threads so people who reference his knives later on can pretend it never happened.

Just out of curiousity does anyone have the links to the threads that weren't deleted and maybe saved ones that were? Thanx.

Matthew,

You may not want to go there. IIRC it started with a knife review in the first issue of our very own on line Bladeforums' Magazine and it continued in dozens of threads for nearly 3 solid months. By the time it was done the knife had been subject to more testing then a UFO relic in Area 51. It had been x-rayed several times, and someone had actually tested it's RC through 40 or 50 different points. The whole thing finally ended with Mad Dogs wild and later debunked claim that the knife had somehow been a forgery; and, a massive inter-forums war, which eventually cost us a few members ( including Kevin McClung).
