I left the case of a solid brass Zippo lighter in a cup of vinegar for a few hours and it developed a patina. Not sure if thats what your after.

You have to remove any coating on the brass first.

Not sure if its coated was gonna clean it with mineral spirits in case it is do they always varnish brass ?

There is a patina used by stained glass artists that will patina lead and brass- to a black and you can then go over lightly with fine steel wool---Regards Butch

Ive noticed that if left in water brass will turn dark, almost black in a few days.

I shot traditional blackpowder for a number of years. If you burn some powder in something and wipe the residue on the brass it will darken it up quite a bit, if the brass has been cleaned of any coating on it.. Sometimes almost black. You can vary the applications to get the color you want. Just wipe it on and leave it for awhile. Makes a nice effect.
