Darkening 3V

Howdy,

I've been reading along for quite a while and I really like the forum. I've been making for a little more than a year, mostly fixed blades. I stock remove and like the wear resistant steels...3V M4 etc.

My question is about finishing 3V for a nice dark gray look. I tried the caswell black oxide gel and it pitted the 3V very badly...don't wanna do that again!

I would try a ten minute bath in a thtree parts water to one of ferris chloride. Frank

yep FeCl or maybe try aparking kit (i have one but have n ont tried 3v in it yet )

I thought about ferric but wondered about the pitting issue. I've never used ferric before so no idea.

What about some Teflon or KG Gunkote?
