Good morning been a lurker here for a while. That said let’s toast my first post.

How can I blacken AEBL I had a buddy order a knife and he wants the blade black. I have do it to carbon blades but not stainless any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Daniel

I got my Devon Thomas damascus (which is AEB-L/304) to get pretty dark. I etched, post heat treat, with ferric chloride. I did many soaks totaling nearly 1 hour to get it as dark as I wanted.

Take a look at Caswell plating. They have a stainless oxidizing solution I have used on Stainless gun parts before.

possible. I only used it a few times...then switched to IONBND....

I use ferric chloride on my AEBL. You can see the color I get on the bevels of this blade.

Guess that’s true, I never thought about that Before. I use to send all the titanimum suppressors we made out for PVD DLC but thy where not temp sensitive.

How long do you etch for? I tried my nitro v for a half hour and got very little colour change
I have similar results with ferric chloride on AEBL. Soaked for 30 plus minutes with only marginal color darkening. More like a bronzing look really.
