I would really like to know why the thread on this subject got locked.

Regardless, you can still use paint stripper to take off an oil finish. You can do it two or three times even, if you think it needs it. Once you get the oil out of it, one application of stain will very likely do it. The whole project shouldn't take more than a couple hours tops.
 
Hey ptradeco, I hope you see this thread. I have no idea why your original one got locked. Maybe it was a mistake. I looked back through several pages, and didn't see another locked post, so I hope I didn't do something wrong. I have absolutely no idea what is going on.

Anyway, just wanted to add that you might have to let the wood dry out from the stripper overnight or so before you use the stain. A light sanding with fine paper (300-400 grit) may be necessary before staining, but you shouldn't have any other problems.
