I recently saw this ad for Darkopsknives in Handgunner magazine. Does anyone know anything about them? I get the feeling these are a division of Extrema Ration under a different name. Does anyone know?
Thanks
Luke

No...just say no! :D

You may want to use the search feature for Dark Op's. It was a highly discussed topic a few months ago. Note, this suggestion was not a flame... :D

Let's just say it's possible to go overboard when introducing a new tactical knife company.

Since I am no longer in the Military, I don't have much need for a knife specifically built and designed for deanimation. What I need now as a Firefighter is a knife built and designed for reanimation. I'm thinking a knife with a built in defibrilator and O2 supply. Maybe a built in Epi injector. What do you guys think. Should I patent the idea? :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. Lukers, no disrespect intended towards your question. If you do a search as suggested you'll get at least an hours worth of entertaining reading. Boink hit the nail on the head. Who knows, maybe they'll be excellent knives.

Have fun guys,
John...

Okay thanks guys. I will look into it. I am just curious. I used to on the forums nonstop. But then I realized I was wasting my life. So I get on every now and then see what is new. I certainly don't want to start a flame, and won't participate in one either. It just seemed like a coincidence that the last 7 numbers of Dark ops number is the same as Extrema Ratios old number. Plus they look the same.

Lukers, it was a damned funny thread.

You can find it HERE.

About the fourth post down, (by Esav I think), is a link to the web ad for them. That's a real riot in itself. If covert deanimations is your thing, this is where you need to go! :)

Have fun.

YES!!! I just sat down and read all 14 pages of the posted DOK thread (see link above) and I still don't know anymore about their knives than I did from their ad in BLADE. Guess I'll be sticking with my old reliables, Benchmade, Spyderco, BK&T, etc.

There are two things in Dark Ops' favor:

1. Frank Miller provided excellent after-purchase service to his customers when he was ER's distributor and there's no reason to doubt he won't do the same in this new venture.

2. The ads state that the folders aren't for regular use so you'll be less apt to buy a Dark Ops folder when what you needed was a Spyderco Calypso Junior.

Beyond that, I'd take the refreshing hype of Lynn Thompson every time.

the reason they have the same number (my conjecture only) is that the new owner of DOK is the old US distributor for Extreme Ratio who is no longer affiliated with ER . (draw your own conclusion on the similarity between their designs).

Run away as fast as you can. The BS-o-meter pegged and broke after about 5 minutes the first time these knives were discussed. :barf:

I don't have much to add other than to say they've already lined up a distribution channel for their products so something may happen at some time. In their shoes, I wouldn't have spent that kind of money on advertising prior to having products but I don't work there and nobody asked me.

What you sense as a negative reaction from the group is that this new company appears to have copied designs from Extrema Ratio, the company whose products they used to distribute. Copy catting knives isn't popular among this group - even if the copy cats are themselves expensive. The copy cats, however, could just have been actual ER knives used in the ads and I suspect that's the case (bad idea if true.) Nobody has seen any of their actual products if such products exist and nobody really knows if they will be copy cats or not. It is a bizarre situation from my perspective and they seem to have started out on the wrong foot. We shall see how it develops.

Even though they may look like ER copies. I'd still like to try one when they're finally available. Hell, Fehrman copied most of their designs from Tops and Busse but that doesn't mean they're inferior blades. Just try to order one but be prepared for many long months of wait. While I'd agree that the way Dark Ops advertise their knives is sometimes fantasy at best, so does Busse with their nuclear-tough slogans. Nothing wrong with that.

Judging by the feedback out there, I have to disagree. The Busse sales talk is considered boastful, but the DarkOps stuff is considered plain embarrassing. Covert, dark, warriors, extreme... when you stuff too many of these bits in one paragraph, you cross the line from American Hero to American Pie. Besides, even creampies may not be entirely convinced of your professionalism when your knife has DARK OPERATIONS written all over it in large letters.

Frank Miller has built a solid reputation for himself. He might think about saving it by kicking the marketing staff who did this to him out the window - preferably from the 20th floor.

As a relative noob here and to tactical knives, I don't know anything about this company or all the hooplah around it. I have seen the ads in the magazines and was immediately turned-off by their desire to insinuate that these knives are only for LE and military personnel. I guess I don't qualify to own one then. Afterall, these things must be more dangerous than my AR-15, 8-round capacity 12 gauge, or full-size 1911 that are my "tactical" weapons! Crap, even Spyderco turns me off with their "Police" models. So these Dark Ops guys left a bad taste in my mouth right-off the bat. And ditto to the ribbings about the company name and/or image. The first time some mall ninja uses a "Dark Ops" knife to cut someone's throat, the proscutor/victim's attorneys will have a field day with that guy on the stand...

I'll have to go now and check out the previous thread linked here. Should be good for some laughs...
