Hello folks,
As most of you noticed, I have been pretty quit lately.. I have some personal reasons - mostly financial if you think about it - but it comes down that I moved out and gotta take care of my own now. I suppose most of you guys remember the first steps away from your parents
.
Anyway.. I have a cool story and several questions arising from them.
A very close friend asked to make a knife for her father. I had a tough time saying no, but then I accepted as it was not going to be anything fancy. She is great designer and made a really pretty design, which fitted perfectly in a 30 mm wide bar, it has to have scales and is about 9 inch long. I had a bar of D-2 of that excact size there... So I started filing as it was annealed.
It filed flawlessly, but then I needed to make the cutout in the ricasso... and my file slipped ( and I bumped my hand painfully
).. I tried to figure out why but i find nothing.. I suppoes there is a hard surface spot so i file a bit harder to get through it.. .... ping... entire bar break in half
YIKES.
I started to freak almost.
Anyway, out of shear frustration I started agian on a bar of 1084 which I actually keep for forgeweldeing as it's pretty thin stuff (1/10 th inch).
Now my questions :
1. What happened to the D2 bar? I mean I could file the rest with the excact same file easy. I'm still a little puzzeled.
2. How do you HT 1084 excactly, because I need this to be a excellent edgeholder - gonna be a farm knife ... kinda ? I can do edge quenches but this is thin stuff so I'm kinda worried. How thick do I leave the edge? Can I do vacuum (molten Salt) quenches in Goddards goop ? How much to temper and how many times? And how good of a cutter will it become?
3. If someone has a bar of D2 of 1 1/4 inch wide by 8 inch too much and is interested in amaterials trade, lemme know too
Thanks for the answers in advance...
Greetz and take care, Bart,
