Darned shields!

I picked up a Boker stockman recently. It's a beautiful knife, and I was just starting to bond with it. The blades have already begun to form a patina, and the washboard bone scales have lost the slick feel that new knives sometimes have. While playing with it today though I heard something drop. I searched and searched until I found a shiny circular object on the carpet. The dang shield fell off! What a PITA, this knife is barely two weeks old. Well at least I found the shield.

I know this is a typical occurrence with slippies, how do you guys fix it? I have some superglue around, but I'm not sure if that's the best solution. Maybe I should use epoxy instead? What do you guys do?

On a brighter note I can now carry my new stag stockman since this Boker is temporarily decommissioned. I wasn't planning on carrying it just yet, I wanted to give the Boker some quality pocket time. But since the Boker isn't cooperating, I guess I have no choice but to use my new Eye Brand knife.

I'll bet Muskrat has a a good suggestion about the shield. At least you found it. I see a knife on Ebay sometimes with a missing shield and it never sells for much. I'd say epoxy over superglue, and I've seen the fixer uppers talk about the best bonding stuff

I wonder if this is a semi-common occurance with Boker. Some years back I bought a new Boker stag stockman and within about a week the shield fell off that one. I used some super glue to put it back on, and it stayed put.

I don't have enough Bokers to offer input on commonality, but I have always used Devcon epoxy (the slow setting stuff) to mount separated shields and scales. I have some repairs that have been carried for twenty years or more.

My EDC was a Boker for about 2 years in the mid 90's. It lost the shield also.

I just had the shield fall off on my new Queen amber CSB gunstock after carrying it about two weeks, so this topic has been on my mind too. I was just going to use super glue.

The shield fell off my Queen Carved Stag Bone Cattle King. I used Super Glue gel and it hasn't come off again. Larry

I've not lost the shield on any of my Bokers, but they did fall out on two knives that I gave as gifts. I think I used Gorilla glue on one and super glue on the other, and it seemed to do the trick in both cases.

I had a shield fall off a Queen BEM Teardrop Jack. I hadn't even carried it, just handled it a little bit and it fell off. I finally epoxied it.

first thing you'll need to do is clean everything with acetone or rubbing alcohol. After it dries you can use one of two things, i've had good luck with both. Loctite superglue which dries on contact (may not be the best solution as it will eliminate the chance to get the shield straight before it dries), my first choice would be devcon 5 minute epoxy. Dries fairly fast, but you have plenty of time to make sure the shield is straight before it cures. I've seen many bokers with missing shields, I guess they don't use a very good adhesive from the factory. Devcon 5 minute epoxy would be my glue of choice for this project.

I have a rosewood Boker whittler that the shield fell off about two months after my dad gave it to me (brand new), back about 12 years ago. Didn't find the shield.

Thanks for the help all!

On another note, I just finished sharpening my 4.25" stag stockman. As much as I like this type knife, it takes a long time to put a polished edge on all three blades.

A shield fell off one of my Henckels (made by Boker)... seems to be a recurring issue. Super glue worked fine for me.

I have never had this happen with pinned shields. :D.

Did epoxy a Case shield that was loose in the box when I purchased it a couple of years ago.

Yep, a knife will blow apart somewhere else before a pinned shield comes off :D

I don't see how any kind of glue will permanantly hold even a small metal object to a natual material such as bone or stag. That stuff "moves" over time with changes in atmosphere and steel doesn't. When you buy a production slip joint with a shield you should probably buy some acetone and a bottle of gap filling cyano.:)

Pinned shields is one reason I like Winchester and Moore Maker knives. Larry

Are there other production knives that have pinned shields? I seem to remember Tony telling me the Case/Bose collaboration knives have pinned shields. That may not sound like a big deal to some but it shows that little "extra mile" a maker is willing to go to make a better product.

I know the current Case/Bose collaboration knives do.

Need to take a close look at the liners tonight on the slimline (first in the series) to see if it did.

Count me in as a fan of those collaborations.
