Okay, I know its a basic thing but I still have some questions. I purchased the kit with the black/green linen upgrade. I don't have a belt sander so I shaped the scales by hand with a file, 60 grit, 100, 150, 400, 600, 1000, and 1500. I now have smooth scales and semi-mirror finished bolsters but the Micarta doesn't shine. Is it possible to put a shine on it?

Also, is it possible to remove the thumb stud so I can polish the blade to perfection?

Last question, I promise. I have some 3/8 handle material that I would like to use. It is layered and I don't want it to splinter. What is the best method to trim this material down to 1/8" ?

All in all I had a fun time putting this kit together and I'm happy with the results. I think I'll make a few of them to give as gifts.

The micarta should shine. try this. Take the back of the 1500 sandpaper or a chunk of leather and rub it over the handle really fast until the paper feels hot. Does this polish it??

Not sure about the thumb stud.

As for the 3/8" handle, you can try to use a bandsaw or table saw to try to cut the material in half, just make sure to keep it flat. If you know of a local machinist with a mill, maybe u could use an end mill and just mill them to 1/8" or whatever thickness you want.

If you search for info about the 605 kit, someone asked how to remove the thumb stud. I remember that Darrel Ralph gave directions on removing it.
Good luck with the kit, I had a blast with mine.

Look in the archives for info on the kit. There is lots of posts!
The thumbers are easy. Two 1/16 drills going in the untightening motion will remove them.

Okay, I completed the kit and had a hell of alot of enjoyment doing it. I sanding all the way through 1500 grit and wasn't satisfied so tonight I brought home my high speed car buffer. I set it at 1600 RPM, smeared some car buffing compound on the handle and bolsters and went at it. I followed this will car polish then a super auto wax and now it has one hell of a gloss. The bolsters are like mirrors and I semi-polished the blade so it shines nicely but will still hide some scratches.

What angle is the blade sharpened at? After all that buffing I dulled it a little bit.
